Innovative look with stainless steel effect on glass

At IFA in Berlin, the world’s leading appliance maker Haier presents new design line of kitchen appliances with SCHOTT MetalLook

The kitchen appliances found in Haier’s new product range combine style and innovative design. Their surfaces shimmer with a stylish stainless steel look which was developed from a pure glass solution without use of metal parts. SCHOTT MetalLook makes it all possible: The unique technology, developed by SCHOTT technology group, perfectly integrates the advantages of the material glass with the high-quality look of stainless steel. Haier, one of the world's leading manufacturers for home appliances, is revealing these products in a distinctive family design at the global trade show IFA, September 6 – 11 in Berlin.

BERLIN, Germany – September 9, 2019At the fair, Haier will be showing a number of kitchen appliances with matching design accomplished by SCHOTT MetalLook, including Baking Oven, Steam Oven as well as Ventilation Hoods and Coffee Machine. There will also be an Induction Hob with SCHOTT CERAN®: A special feature, because SCHOTT was able to develop a matching design with the same metallic look for the two different materials Flat Glass and Glass Ceramics. This gives the entire appliance family a consistent look and feel which supports the trend of the so called Family Design in the kitchen. "We were looking for new possibilities for a high-quality metallic look which we could use to aesthetically differentiate our product line across all kitchen appliances," explains Mr. Xue, Haier Kitchen Appliances Overseas Director. “And were very impressed by the design options and the fancy, innovative appearance of SCHOTT MetalLook as well as its processability and durability.”

Stylish like metal, easy to clean like glass

To achieve the distinct stainless steel look behind glass with different color options and effects, SCHOTT developed its own patented technical solution. With possible fine logos, lines or symbols, this technology optimally supports operating features and design elements. Fingerprints are less visible than on metal parts and much easier to remove. Cleaning of oven doors has never been easier because MetalLook eliminates gaps between glass and metal on traditional oven doors. In contrast to competitive solutions, the SCHOTT patented technology is ideal for kitchen appliances thanks to its high temperature resistance, attractive and high-end appearance with vivid brush pattern.

Customer-specific development

Haier firstly approached SCHOTT VTF in France back in 2017, the initial holder of MetalLook technology. Actual development for Haier was then started in SCHOTT China facility in Suzhou per customer request. SCHOTT China team adapted the MetalLook solution to local customer requirements and achieved the tailored grey-metallic effect on various products with different surface structure. This was achieved in a relatively short timeframe. "A large number of glass samples were delivered quickly, so that the customer could present the design concept as a whole set for top management review, which was extremely challenging but led to success of this project.” cites Iris Yang, Asia Sales Director at SCHOTT Flat Glass.

Haier officially introduced the new product line with SCHOTT MetalLook under its premium brand Casarte at AWE (Appliances & Electronics World Expo) in Shanghai, China in March as an exhibition highlight. It caught the high attention from AWE visitors, especially the professional audiences. In addition to the upcoming IFA presentation in Berlin, the leading home appliance manufacturer is rolling out the MetalLook family line to hundreds of flagship stores across China, accompanied by advertising campaigns. It’s also planned to launch these products to main markets in Europe, such as Germany, France, Italy, UK, Russia, Ukraine etc.  "We knew from different enquires and market research that MetalLook fits exactly the taste of high-end Asian consumers, and we look forward to the positive response from the market in China as well as in Europe." says Iris Yang from SCHOTT.
