New electric compressor terminals for high-voltage automobile applications

High-performance SCHOTT e-Compressor Terminals meet rising demand for high-voltage components that support electric vehicle air-conditioning systems up to 800V
Shanghai, China – 8 November 2018 – SCHOTT AG, a global pioneer in developing and manufacturing hermetically sealed feedthroughs and terminal seals, will introduce its new SCHOTT® e-Compressor Terminals for automotive air-conditioning (AC) systems to the Chinese market. These highly reliable electric compressor terminals are developed with SCHOTT’s unique rubber insulation design that supports high voltage applications up to 800V in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Their excellent hermeticity enables compressors to remain durably gas-tight and withstand high-pressure refrigerants, supporting the safe transfer of large amounts of energy – even under harsh environmental conditions. Other applications include air-conditioning systems in electrically powered trucks and buses, high-speed rail, and server rooms.

SCHOTT will display its full range of e-Compressor terminals at the China International Auto Air-conditioning & Transportation Refrigeration Exhibition (CIAAR) in Shanghai, 13th – 15th November 2018, booth #3C68, Shanghai Everbrite Convention & Exhibition Center.

Demand for high-voltage AC compressors on the rise
China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market is projected to maintain a high growth pace. For the first eight months of 2018, production and sales of NEVs reached 607,000 and 601,000 units respectively – an increase of 75.4% and 88% year over year.

Growing alongside total NEV output is the demand for vehicle AC systems, a standard and essential configuration in modern NEVs. China had demand of 755,000 units of electric air-conditioners in 2017, soaring up 44.9% from a year earlier. The market is estimated to reach demand of 1.487 million air-conditioners by 2023.

Auto manufacturers around the world have been making the move towards adopting electric compressors for their AC systems, starting out by using them alongside internal combustion (IC) engines for hybrid vehicles. Electric compressors were found to be more energy efficient than their conventional belt-driven counterparts and have greater cooling functionality.

With a growing trend in high-voltage systems, there is a requirement for more powerful automotive components due to the battery's high-energy cells that allow for greater speeds and range. Since electric compressors function with their own motor independent of the engine, high-voltage electric compressors must be hermetically sealed and have excellent electrical insulation.

Robust, high-performance compressor terminals for high-voltage applications
Experts at SCHOTT have developed hermetic glass-to-metal seals for electric compressors in NEVs that can withstand up to 800V. These SCHOTT® e-Compressor Terminals make use of additional rubber insulation, a material that has been used by SCHOTT in commercial compressor terminals and is now being utilized in electric vehicles. The excellent electric insulation properties of rubber enable higher voltage capacity compared to other insulation materials, greatly enhancing the stability of automotive AC systems. The design also prevents harmful condensation.

SCHOTT® e-Compressor Terminals combine the adoption of rubber as an insulation material together with SCHOTT’s unique glass-to-metal sealing (GTMS) technology. GTMS creates a vacuum-tight assembly of the metal pin enclosed by pre-formed sintered glass, feeding the electrical conductor through the walls of the hermetically sealed terminal. This offers protection against leakage of refrigerant, even under sustained exposure to adverse conditions of extreme temperatures, moisture, and vibration.

SCHOTT’s flexible design enables the compressor terminals to support various refrigerants, including R134a, HFO-1234yf, and R744, which is a CO2 refrigerant that requires particularly robust pressure resistance of up to 20MPa. SCHOTT® e-Compressor Terminals can also support high current between 30A – 150A.
