SCHOTT to exhibit bendable ultra-thin glass at C-Touch in Shenzhen

The flexible and yet strong ultra-thin SCHOTT AS 87 eco glass has the ability to bring smartphones and wearable devices to the next level. Visitors are invited to discover the innovation at C-Touch Shenzhen at booth 1C19 in hall 1.
The future of mobile devices will be highly flexible and bendable. Ultra-thin glass, thinner than a human hair, is a key enabler for future form factor innovations in consumer electronics. The leading international technology group SCHOTT will display the environmentally friendly produced aluminosilicate (AS) glass in thicknesses ranging from 50 – 400 μm. After chemical toughening, the glass strength is as high as the current leading mobile phone cover glass and can withstand the challenges of demanding applications, such as 2D, 2.5D or 3D screen protector glass for displays, and cover glass for fingerprint sensors and camera modules. Additionally, the ultra-thin glass can be utilized as an encapsulation material in micro-batteries or as an IC packaging substrate.

“At last year’s C-Touch we introduced SCHOTT AS 87 eco to the market. This year, we will focus on a broad variety of already established applications for our product, such as smartphone display screen protector”, says Dr. Jack Ju, Head of Global Product Management at SCHOTT Advanced Optics. “The high strength and flexibility of our glass is truly unique – we underline this fact by continuously stressing ultra-thin glass samples in bending machines. Besides that, our impressive glass zipper apparatus furls glass on a roll.”

Since its market launch in 2016, the sales volume of the ultra-thin glass SCHOTT AS 87 eco constantly increased. SCHOTT will continue the marketing activities to further boost sales growth. SCHOTT AS 87 eco is an aluminosilicate glass that is best suited for chemical strengthening via an ion exchange treatment. The glass is sustainably “Made in Germany” and available in mass production, making SCHOTT the only glass manufacturer worldwide capable of producing such aluminosilicate glass in thicknesses below 100 μm in mass production. The proprietary production process – the SCHOTT down-draw technology – allows very tight thickness tolerances of ± 10 μm or lower, offers a pristine fire-polished, a variety of thicknesses, and complies with the regulations of RoHS and REACH regarding its environmental friendliness. The glass itself has excellent transmission characteristics and outstanding quality.
