Overcoming all distances – with high-speed TO solutions

High-performance TO headers and caps from SCHOTT can replace box packages in long, middle, and even short range data transmission.
The international technology group SCHOTT offers high-performance Transistor Outline (TO) packages for all major high-speed single- and multi-mode fiber applications. Due to their high-frequency capabilities, the latest SCHOTT TO packages cater to data transmission requirements in PON, Datacenters and long haul and represent a high performance, miniaturized and economical alternative to box packages. The company will present its broad range of TO headers and caps at CIOE in Shenzhen from September 6-9, 2017 (booth 1A50, hall 1).

Replacing box packages with SCHOTT 10G DML TEC TOs

In the world of FTTH, passive optical networks (PON) are upping speeds to 10 Gbit/s. The recent introduction of Combo PON allows for this upgrade, but also requires that transmission signals be kept within a tight 5 nm wavelength range, which can only be achieved with a thermoelectric cooler (TEC). To meet these new requirements and reduce the reliance on electro-absorption modulated lasers (EML), manufacturers of Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser chips can now look forward to using SCHOTT’s new 10G DML TEC TO headers instead of conventional box packages: – thanks to its two single-ended high-frequency feedthroughs having an impedance of 25 ohms each, the   headers can be used in both 10G PON and 10GE PON applications.

Miniature TOs for QSFP transceivers to support 4x25 Gbit/s

On the shorter reach, having previously developed the 28G TO38 headers for the Transmit side of the 100G QSFP28 transceiver used in both PSM4 and CWDM4 applications, SCHOTT now offers miniature  TO33 headers that can be used on the Receive side for 28G single-channel or 100G quad applications. Sporting a 100-ohm differential impedance, the small size of this latest development allows customers to fit eight TO headers into their QSFP28 transceivers for modulation speeds of up to 100 Gbps.

The perfect cap for every header

As a one-stop shop, SCHOTT offers suitable standard lens or window caps for both the 10G DML TEC TO header, as well as the TO33 and TO38 headers. “We can propose perfectly matching TO caps for all kinds of TO headers.” explains Kenneth Tan, Research & Development Manager at SCHOTT in Singapore. “Built on a foundation of more than 50 years of experience in the TO field, SCHOTT’s unique expertise however lies in the development of custom-made TO headers and caps that perfectly fit the customers’ requirements.” says Tan.

Meeting customer needs of long reaches

Moving over to the long haul, SCHOTT has developed an economical version of the butterfly package. Since margins for pump lasers have been paper-thin in recent years, SCHOTT has developed innovative ideas that can meet customer requirements for more competitive options. Apart from pump lasers in EDFA and Raman amplifiers, the butterfly package can also be used in cable TV and diverse sensing applications.
