Young designers firing the outdoor fireplace trend

Top designs for outdoor fireplaces honored with SCHOTT ROBAX® Design Award
Rethinking the traditional fireplace: In the first SCHOTT ROBAX® Design Award competition, young designers demonstrated that the still quite young product category of outdoor fireplaces will be an area for attractive design concepts in the near future. Its most important element is the fire viewing panel, which offers that fireplace feeling, protecting fire and person simultaneously. Among the more than 80 participants, the design “Dome” by Angela Wegmann (Technical University of Mainz) was the winner. The highlight: the six best-placed designs among were auctioned at the award ceremony in the middle of March, and a book with all the designs will soon be available to SCHOTT customers. The young designers will have the opportunity to see their designs put to actual use.

“We were excited about the number and variety of submissions,” said SCHOTT ROBAX® Marketing Manager Isabel Eymael and designer Sebastian Herkner, the jury’s Chairman. Herkner added, “The award ceremony has shown that we, as designers , are able to reconsider the product category of outdoor fireplaces with ROBAX® fire viewing panels.” The students were completely free in their designing. The use of glass-ceramic fire viewing panels was prescribed – but alongside great design freedom. Here, the glass-ceramic that SCHOTT offers ranges from minimalist flat to elegant round to angularly shaped. Angela Wegmann best implemented this concept from the perspective of the jury: “The design ‘DOME Fireplace’ with its formal independence is reminiscent of a burning glass that allows for transparency dared to be furthest away from all other submissions,” was said in the laudation.

The outdoors is a lifestyle trend
The fact that the desire for outdoor life is great among the majority of the population is confirmed by trend researcher Dr. Eike Wenzel. “Whoever wants to be “in” goes out,” the expert said during the award ceremony. “The outdoors is a lifestyle trend in which people expand their living area to express themselves.” It is precisely this trend that SCHOTT wants to support with this award. Outdoor fireplaces function as true objects of design for terraces and gardens, even extending the outdoor season. The presented and awarded designs mark a further step in this direction.

Fiery award ceremony and auction for a good cause
Students from the fields of product design, industrial design, architecture, interior architecture and art were invited to participate in the first SCHOTT ROBAX® Design Award. The over 80 participants came from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. For the three first-placed contestants and the three special mentions, SCHOTT promised prize money of 11,500 euros in total. The proceeds from the auction will benefit charitable causes. The fitting conclusion to the event in Frankfurter Westhafen Pier 1 was an exciting firework show.
