Groundbreaking for SCHOTT building extension in Müllheim
Highest individual investment in a site / Expanding production capacity for the internal coating of pharmaceutical vials

“With a high single-digit million amount, this production expansion is the highest individual investment by SCHOTT at the Müllheim site. This will allow us to improve our competitiveness in the long term,” emphasized Bernhard Langner. Andreas Reisse pointed out that Müllheim, the only German site in SCHOTT’s international network of pharmaceutical packaging plants, is an important unit for its concentration of key coating technology and its developed expertise in vial production. “Many years of experience and constant willingness to improve are important factors in our exchange of know-how with other sites,” explained the Executive Vice President of the Pharmaceutical Systems Business Unit.
The Müllheim plant currently employs around 260 people. Production focuses on high-quality glass vials for the pharmaceutical industry, which are produced from glass tubing in a complex forming process. Every year, around 300 million units leave production lines. The company also has significant expertise in the interior coating of pharmaceutical vials. The plasma coating used here is intended for filling special medications. This prevents chemical interactions between the glass surface and the drug. “With this functional coating developed by SCHOTT, we can deliver the innovative packaging solutions that the pharmaceutical industry demands,” Langner said during the ceremony.
