Wanted: Creative designs for “open air” fireplaces

SCHOTT ROBAX® launches design award for students
With the SCHOTT ROBAX® Design Award, SCHOTT is inviting students all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland to reinterpret outdoor fireplaces as design objects. They can submit their ideas starting immediately for a chance to win prizes totaling EUR 10,000. Winners will be presented in mid-March during the 2017 ISH Trade Fair in Frankfurt, Germany.

“Outdoors” has become a mega-trend: 79% of humans hear the call of the outdoors. No matter whether it is summer or winter, night or day, or merely always. An outdoor fireplace extends the gardening season and is also a great design object for a patio or garden. “We want to inspire the next generation of creative designers to think about outdoor fireplaces and learn what ideas they have in mind,” says SCHOTT ROBAX® Head of Marketing Isabel Eymael, the organizer of the competition. “We invite students in the fields of product design, industrial design, architecture, interior design and art to participate.”

One element is to connect all the designs: SCHOTT ROBAX® fire viewing panels are perfectly suited for the newest social area and living space – the “outdoors”. The special properties of glass-ceramic really come into its own in the great outdoors. It offers protection against escaping flames, flying sparks and smoke, and at the same time a clear view of the glowing fire.

The panels can be produced with an opening angle of up to 270°. With two attaching 180° panels it is even possible to achieve a 360° panoramic fire viewing. “The designers can exercise complete freedom. From minimalist flat to elegantly curved or even angular bent panels… anything goes,” says Eymael. “We can’t wait to see the designs!”
