Capturing color like the human eye: SCHOTT enables OPPO Find X8 Ultra to reinvent night photography

05 May 2025, Germany, Mainz

  • The new OPPO Find X8 Ultra features high-quality SCHOTT optical filter glass, delivering more natural and true-to-life colors in photography.
  • SCHOTT's near-infrared (NIR) cut filter glass, optimized to mimic the human eye’s response to light, boosts infrared absorption efficiency by 81%, enabling more accurate color-capture at night.
  • SCHOTT and OPPO share a long-term partnership, bringing innovation to consumer electronics through advanced materials – such as SCHOTT UTG® flexible glass used in OPPO’s foldable phones.
The OPPO Find X8 Ultra incorporates SCHOTT’s high-performance NIR cut filter glass into its imaging system, which was jointly developed with Hasselblad. This collaboration allowed OPPO to develop an ultra-crystalline blue glass that significantly enhances night photography with true-color image capturing.

The SCHOTT filter absorbs nearly all NIR radiation while maintaining high light transmittance. Optimized to replicate the way human eyes perceive light, it enhances the phone’s ability to absorb infrared light by 81%, resulting in more lifelike and natural night images. A pioneer in specialty glass, SCHOTT has built a long-standing collaboration with OPPO. Beyond high-quality optical glass, SCHOTT also supplies its ultra-thin, flexible SCHOTT® UTG glass for OPPO’s innovative foldable devices.

Although invisible to the human eye, natural infrared light is easily detected by smart phone sensors – often leading to optical issues like color distortion. To tackle this, the Find X8 Ultra’s imaging system – developed in collaboration with Hasselblad – incorporates SCHOTT’s advanced NIR cut filter glass. The result is an ultra-crystalline blue glass with outstanding infrared absorption that significantly reduces night scene glare and noise.

Driving innovation in consumer electronics with specialty glass

SCHOTT has maintained a long-term partnership with OPPO, delivering high-performance materials that enable product breakthroughs—from precision optical filter glass to SCHOTT® UTG, the ultra-thin flexible glass used in OPPO’s foldable phones.

“Imaging is the intersection of technology and art,” said James Wang, Sales Manager of SCHOTT Optical Glass. “At SCHOTT, we are dedicated to helping partners push the boundaries of innovation through specialty materials—so users can better capture the beauty of life.”

Founded in 1884 by Otto Schott, the inventor of specialty glass, the company pioneered optical glass with precisely controlled properties—enabling Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe to create the most advanced microscopes of their time. For over 140 years, SCHOTT has driven industry advancement with high-performance materials. Today, its optical products—including NIR cut and optical filter glass—power innovation across consumer electronics, medical technology, automotive systems, and more.
