Resists each cleaning maniac -
SCHOTT CONTURAN® for healthcare applications

That exactly is CONTURAN®?
It’s the real all-rounder among our glasses! CONTURAN® comes with a tough anti-reflective coating that’s been dip-coated as part of a complex process that we at SCHOTT have developed. We have virtually eradicated all annoying reflections to provide a near-perfect view, enabling usage in all kinds of ambient light.
Medizinisches-Display-Conturan
First choice in healthcare applications
For a long time, digital imagery has been essential in the modern medical sector. Also essential is an unrestricted clear view of displays to ensure correct diagnoses – even if lighting isn’t always ideal. This is where CONTURAN® comes into play. While ordinary cover glass shows about 8 % of reflection, CONTURAN® stays under 1%. This guarantees a non-glare view on examination results.
Anti- Reflex-Beschichtung von CONTURAN®
Ready for maximum hygiene requirements
To provide optimum viewing of content over the long term, display glass in the medical sector also needs to cope with daily cleaning by a multitude of chemical agents. CONTURAN® benefits here from continuous development and the sol-gel dip coating developed by SCHOTT. CONTURAN® has been specially adapted to the needs of medical technology so that it can easily withstand regular and intensive cleaning by most cleaning agents. Even aggressive cleaning agents* used to meet the highest of hygiene standards cannot damage the anti-reflective layer.

Anti- Reflex-Beschichtung von CONTURAN®
Highest performance in cleaning matters
We tested the resistance to chemicals with a wide range of relevant disinfectants and cleaning supplies – more than 30 test solutions were applied during the standardised test based on UB MED MFR 890/009. The tough anti-reflective coating from CONTURAN® successfully passed all the tests and emerged as the clear winner.

CONTURAN® put to the test
The test was carried out by the materials testing center in Karlsruhe in accordance with the UB MED guideline MFR 890/009 which subjected CONTURAN® to intensive resistance testing.

The test applied standard, medical-sector cleaning agents containing various classes of active ingredients and then examined their impact on CONTURAN® over several hours. The surfaces and their appearance were assessed and evaluated.

Based on this test, we provide recommendations on the majority of the substances tested:
Class of chemical agent Specific test medium Result
Alcohol Incidur-Spray (undiluted), Ethanol (96 % Vol.), Mykrozid liquid (undiluted), Meliseptol rapid (undiluted), Isopropyl (70 %)
Aldehyde Melsitt (10 % Vol.), Lysoformin (2 % Vol.), Aldasan 2000 (4 % Vol.),
Kohrsolin (0.5 % Vol.), Dismozon (0.5 %)
Peroxide compounds Perform (3 %), Hydrogen Peroxide (3 %)
Pyridine derivative Spray Activ (undiluted)
Benzine Benzine / Petroleum ether (undiluted)
Dish liquid Regular dish liquid (1 %)
Organic acids Bio-AntiBact med
Limewater
Alkylamine Incidin Plus (8.0 % Vol.)
Quaternary compounds Mykrozid sensitive liquid (undiluted), Morning Mist (1:64 diluted),
Terralin protect (2.0 % Vol.), Microbac® Tissues (direct)
Taski Sprint DS 5001 (0.5 % Vol.), Sulfanios Fraicheur Citron (0.25 % Vol.)

Conturan® Medical Displays Taber-Test
Testing the abrasion resistance of coating with the Taber Abrasion Process
Maximum value in additional disciplines
  • As a matter of course, CONTURAN® also performed brilliantly in conventional tests that rigorously examined the durability of surfaces under extreme circumstances. Among these tests were the
  • standardised CASS (Copper-accelerated acid salt spray test) and
  • the NSS (Neutral salt spray test) that tested the anticorrosive coating.
The mechanical durability of CONTURAN® also achieved top marks during testing: CONTURAN® successfully passed both the Taber Abrasion Test as well as the Tesa Test, highlighting its durability against the forces at play when adhesive tape is ripped from the coating.
Pencil Hardness Test to check scratch resistance
Pencil Hardness Test to check scratch resistance
  • The Pencil Hardness Test achieved class 9H, a significantly higher score than so far gained by anti-reflective surfaces.
Cheesecloth test shows the good resistance of the coating
Cheesecloth test shows the good resistance of the coating
The Cheesecloth test is another indicator of the good resistance of the coating. It is based on DIN ISO 9211-4 and simulates moderate abrasion. In this test, a cushion of gauze is pressed onto a coated surface with a certain force and then moved several times. The surface is then checked for damage. Competing products are 95 % worse than SCHOTT products in this test.
