IFA 2022: Kitchen innovations from leading brands rely on SCHOTT glass

Whether as a cooktop, an oven, or an extractor hood, modern kitchen appliances rely on specialty glass.

At IFA 2022 in Berlin, well-known household appliance manufacturers will be showcasing SCHOTT’s innovations for the kitchen, including CERAN Luminoir™ and SCHOTT® Duo Design.
Whether in the iconic black cooktop or in a viewing panel in the oven or refrigerator, glass and glass ceramic are important components of modern, quality kitchen appliances. "We are delighted that our customers will be presenting numerous innovative products at IFA that rely on SCHOTT glass and glass-ceramic," says Dr. Jörn Besinger, Head of Product Management & New Business Development at SCHOTT CERAN®. Well-known brands such as Miele, BSH, Berbel, and Benthaus, as well as Haier, Arçelik, Vestel, and Kumtel will be presenting their newest products featuring various solutions from SCHOTT. "When it comes to new product development, we always work closely with our customers so that they can bring the best technologies and designs to people's kitchens," said Gregor Grosse, Head of Global Product Development & Innovation Management at SCHOTT Flat Glass. International technology group SCHOTT serves as an innovation and design partner for the home appliance industry all over the world.
Trends for the kitchen
For the last few years, the industry has been trending toward smart, connected kitchens. This year, that journey continues. Here, lighting features that visually support appliances’ connectedness and make cooking more exciting and fun are particularly important. Last year, SCHOTT launched CERAN Luminoir™, a new glass-ceramic that allows home appliance manufacturers to easily implement bright and true-color lighting solutions. "Thanks to a new material formulation, our glass-ceramic is more translucent and allows for lighting solutions without additional filters and coatings," explains Evelin Weiß, Head of Material Development Projects at SCHOTT CERAN®. CERAN Luminoir™ can now be seen for the first time in various household appliance brands at the IFA and will also be available to consumers in the coming months.
Light as well as unusual appliance designs are important factors for the kitchens of the future. Appliance fronts featuring flat glass printing technologies like SCHOTT® Duo Design can be design objects: it can provide the look and feel of natural materials, like stone, marble, wood, or even metal, thanks to a special printing technology on both sides of the glass. Even unusual graphic or 3D designs can be realized with the technology, which relies on a special ceramic and environmentally friendly ink. "We offer a large portfolio of different printing technologies. This gives our customers numerous options to get creative. This will make tomorrow's kitchens much more diverse," says Grosse. Above all, he says, individual brand logos design is an important element for household appliance manufacturers in positioning their own products and differentiating them from the competition.
