With FIOLAX® Pro OCF, we will create a product line which will set the standard for the future. With the same chemical and physical properties as FIOLAX® Pro this new variant has a significantly reduced CO₂e product carbon footprint (PCF)*.

SCHOTT Tubing aims to achieve emission reductions through the planned introduction of a completely new electric tank technology in early 2027, which will use 100 % electricity in the melting tank - electricity that is, in turn, covered by certificates of origin from renewable energy sources. Natural gas is still used only in the separate refining unit and in the working tank for technical reasons.

Based on empirical values of the glass tubing production and current simulation data, the new FIOLAX® Pro OCF product line is projected to have a CO₂e footprint* that is approximately 50% lower, which is expected to be below the market average for borosilicate glass.

This important step is also reflected in our PCF declaration, through which we aim to help set new standards for the specialty glass industry. The detailed declaration provides the calculated PCF value for FIOLAX® Pro OCF in accordance with a standardized guideline that ensures transparency and reliability. For the first time, both the calculation guideline and the PCF value calculated on this basis have been certified by the external, accredited institute GUTcert**.

FIOLAX® Pro OCF - part of the FIOLAX® Pro family - is a Type I borosilicate glass, free of heavy metals, that is characterized by excellent hydrolytic stability and an improved extractables profile (lower leaching) compared to FIOLAX® clear. It will be available for all packaging formats, such as syringes, cartridges, vials, and ampoules, with outer diameters ranging from 6.85 mm to 40.00 mm.

Transparency is the key

SCHOTT - as a leading pioneer in the glass industry - developed a standardized approach for the calculation of product carbon footprints across its several business units. This PCF guideline builds the basis for the calculation and ensures a high degree of reliability as well as transparency. It is certified by the external, accredited institute GUTcert*.

This enables our customers for the first time to calculate their Scope 3 emissions in a transparent, reliable way and achieving their environmental goals.

With this PCF declaration we set a new benchmark for the specialty glass industry. Each calculation follows the same standard and gives our customers transparency as well as a deeper understanding for their Scope 3.1 emissions.

We need to act now

The business unit Tubing is one of the biggest contributors to SCHOTT's ambitious climate targets. An innovative electric tank technology powered by 100% of electricity in the production process covered by renewable energy Guarantees of Origin, will be a game changer by the beginning of 2027. Only in the separate refining unit and in the working tank natural gas is still used. The result: a largely decarbonized pharmaceutical glass production on a big scale at the high quality level, as usual for pharmaceutical industry. SCHOTT invests about 40 Mio Euro in this future technology and aims to set a new standard in the industry, partly supported by the German government and European Union.
