Reduced Contamination Risk and Higher Process Yield in Bioreactors
Innovative SCHOTT ViewPort™ PAT components enable in-situ bioprocess monitoring without compromising the sterile boundary

Biopharmaceutical processes require reliable analytical methods to ensure product safety, quality and productivity. However, conventional methods depend on opening the bioreactor when extracting a sample or compromising the sterile boundary when inserting a probe, which increases the risk of contamination. With SCHOTT ViewPort™ process analytical technology (PAT) components, continuous in-situ measurement is possible without penetrating the bioreactor barrier. The metal conduit, which acts as a receptacle and optical interface for sensors or spectrometers, features a tightly sealed optical window consisting of sapphire, which enables real-time process monitoring. The components are developed and manufactured by the optical glass and glass-to-metal sealing expert SCHOTT in Germany, and are available as standard variants for multi-use bioreactors (MUB) as well as customized versions for single-use bioreactors (SUB).

Translucent-black glass-ceramic ROBAX® NightView not only calms the bright and often agitated display of flames, it also conceals the technical and not always clean interior when the fire is out. The new fire-viewing panel will be on display for the first time from February 19 to 22, 2020, at the Progetto Fuoco Trade Fair in Verona, Italy (Hall 9, Stand C12).

Groundbreaking ceremony for a new SCHOTT pharmaceutical packaging plant in Müllheim
Investment in the three-digit million euro range / 100 new jobs

By breaking ground, the specialty glass manufacturer SCHOTT has given the starting signal for the construction of a new production facility for sterile pharmaceutical primary packaging made of polymer at its Müllheim site in Germany. The state-of-the-art plant is to be built by 2022 with an investment volume in the three-digit million euro range and will then offer 100 additional jobs.

Sights set on the sun – DKIST delivers fascinating first images
The largest solar telescope in the world is using a mirror substrate made of the glass-ceramic ZERODUR® from SCHOTT

The first images from the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) of the National Science Foundation (NSF) were published end of January: They show unprecedented details of the sun’s surface and offer a preview of the outstanding results that are expected from this 4-meter solar telescope. This imaging quality is made possible by a monolithic 4.26-meter mirror made of the glass-ceramic ZERODUR®. The huge mirror diameter and the extraordinary material properties make it possible to observe structures on the sun that are 25 kilometers in size, although the sun is almost 150 million kilometers away. This equates to observing a pea from a distance of 30 kilometers. The resolving power is thus 2.6 times higher than that of the largest solar telescope to date, the Big Bear Solar Observatory near Los Angeles, which also uses a primary mirror made of ZERODUR®.

SCHOTT launches static ceramic converters for superior luminance in the U.S.
New ceramic material is a strong enabler for compact laser light applications

The trend of the worldwide lighting solutions market is more and more focusing on laser light. These technologies promise manufacturers applications with superior performance in a smaller package, but also – thanks to innovative materials - to optimize performance and reliability of the light sources. Especially for laser-pumped phosphor light sources, experts from the international technology group SCHOTT have developed unique phosphor ceramic converter assemblies, which offer high irradiance and superior luminance. After its successful launch at the CIOE in China last year, SCHOTT will present an advanced static ceramic converters product line at the SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco, California, Feb. 4- 6, 2020. SCHOTT, Inkron, EVG, and WaveOptics: Global AR leaders team up to enable next-gen waveguides at Photonics West
Prominent Augmented Reality (AR) companies join forces to accelerate the journey to consumer-grade AR wearable devices. SCHOTT, Inkron, EV Group (EVG), and WaveOptics present the world's first waveguides made on glass substrate with a refractive index of 1.9 and a matching nanostructured polymer – produced on a 300 mm wafer platform ready for mass production.

SCHOTT, a leading international technology group and the inventor of optical glass, now unveils SCHOTT RealView™ high-index glass wafers with a refractive index of 1.9 and a diameter of 300 mm. These wafers are the basis for high-volume next-generation AR waveguide manufacturing at lower cost per unit, while also maintaining the extremely high precision standards that AR demands. The nanotech company Inkron manufactures the resin that matches the refractive index of 1.9. The resin was used to imprint as many as 24 waveguides on a single 300 mm SCHOTT RealView™ 1.9 wafer using the fully integrated and volume-proven EVG HERCULES® NIL nanoimprint platform. This product combines the glass expertise of SCHOTT and the formulation and resin innovation of Inkron with the standard-setting nanoimprint lithography (NIL) capabilities of EVG by using a renowned waveguide architecture of WaveOptics, the leading optical design house for high-performance waveguides. Milestone: Tertiary mirror substrate for the ELT delivered
SCHOTT produces substrates for four of the five mirrors of the ESO telescope / Series production for the giant mirror to start in the spring

The SCHOTT technology group is manufacturing the material for a total of four out of five mirrors for the precise view into space that will be provided by the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) at ESO (European Southern Observatory). It is considered to be the world’s most powerful telescope in the future. After components for the segmented fourth mirror (M4) had already been delivered in 2016 and the world’s largest convex 4.2 m secondary mirror (M2) in 2019, the tertiary mirror substrate (M3) has now left the SCHOTT headquarters in Mainz. The glass-ceramic substrate, which measures four meters in diameter, is ten centimeters thick and weighs 3.2 tons. It will be finely polished by the French company Safran Reosc for several months before it begins its journey to Chile on top of the Cerro Armazones that is over 3,000 meters high. The ELT is scheduled to have its “First Light” in 2025. Astronomers want to use the giant telescope (total value EUR 1.1 billion) to track down exoplanets outside our solar system, gain detailed knowledge of stars and galaxies in the still young universe and unravel the mystery of dark energy.
