Sustainability

The guiding principle of sustainability is deeply rooted in SCHOTT’s company history. It stems from our unique corporate model and has its roots in the Foundation Statute from 1896. Responsible corporate governance, responsibility for employees and society, as well as the environment and the climate are the core elements of our sustainability strategy.

Environmental Responsibility

Environmental protection has been one of SCHOTT's key corporate goals for decades. Time and again, we have set new sustainability standards in the glass industry, and we want to do the same when it comes to protecting the climate. As a globally operating group, we want to actively contribute, and reduce the CO2 emissions in our production step by step.

However, our responsibility does not end at the factory gates. That is why we are also committed to the community around our locations around the world.

    Innovation drives the future

SCHOTT won the 2024 New Gases Innovation Award in the Application Technology category. Our "100% Hydrogen in Glass Production" project demonstrates that replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen in industrial-scale glass manufacturing is technically feasible. However, achieving this transition requires hydrogen at competitive prices and a well-developed infrastructure.

    Innovative hydrogen project

SCHOTT received the 2025 SPIE Catalyst Award for developing innovative solutions in specialty glass manufacturing. The project, "Production of Optical Glass Using 100% Hydrogen," demonstrated that specialty glass can be produced entirely with hydrogen without compromising quality. This achievement underscores that decarbonizing glass production is not only essential but also technically feasible. Widespread adoption, however, will require a reliable hydrogen supply and supportive economic conditions.
