Parenteral Packaging Challenges? Our Glass Expertise Can Help!

Scientists in the pharmaceutical industry battle a lot of unique drug challenges with respect to their parenteral primary packaging, be it pH shifts, drug instability, ineffective lyophilization or light sensitivity. At SCHOTT Tubing in India, we understand your challenges: Our glass, FIOLAX ®, needed for pharmaceutical containers is designed to address these specific needs since 1911 and locally since 1998. Read more to understand our solutions to address your primary packaging challenges.

pH stability

Drug formulations, including water for injection, can be stored safely thanks to the excellent barrier properties of glass. FIOLAX® is a borosilicate glass tubing with low alkali content that reduces alkali borate appearance. This offers impressive hydrolytic and chemical glass resistance, minimizing the risk of drug container interactions.

The tubing product line FIOLAX® clear CHR is beneficial for highly demanding formulations. These formulations are sensitive to extractables such as sodium in pH-sensitive / unbuffered formulations. Here, hydrolytic resistance of the inner glass surface along with glass grains is monitored.

Drug stability

Biotech drugs have become increasingly important. These drugs are often sensitive to factors like oxygen, water vapor, pH changes, glass composition making the choice of glass packaging critical. Inadequate glass quality can lead to interactions that may degrade or compromise the drug's effectiveness.

That’s why SCHOTT’s FIOLAX® glass tubing portfolio offers superior barrier properties, high temperature and thermal shock resistance with low alkali content since 1911. FIOLAX® clear CHR tubing product line ensures controlled low sodium release, improved Extractables & Leachables profile and monitored hydrolytic resistance.

Drug lyophilization

Lyophilization, or freeze-drying, preserves injectable drugs by removing water. This is a demanding procedure as the parenteral container is frozen from inside and at the same time heated from the bottom. A container made of FIOLAX® tubing (CTE of 4.9) can bear a temperature difference of almost 200°C and therefore has optimal temperature shock resistance.

Also, did you know that internal pressure during lyophilization challenges the strength of the glass, and any surface defects can further weaken it? Our product line FIOLAX® clear with Optimized Strength (OS) tubing is developed with special attention to avoid surface defects.

Light sensitivity

Light-sensitive drugs require special packaging to prevent photolytic degradation. Glass with Iron (Fe) and Titanium (Ti) give a brownish color effectively absorbing UV light (200-400 nm), ensuring drug protection. FIOLAX® amber tubing helps to secure the long-term stability of light-sensitive drugs. The stable composition of this Type I glass ensures consistent amber color and light protection, achieved by adding iron and titanium oxide.

Light transmittance can also be controlled by the container's wall thickness and the annealing temperature. Thicker walls and higher temperatures result in darker glass and less light penetration.

Dosing accuracy

In pharmaceuticals, every microgram counts. SCHOTT’s FIOLAX® glass tubing, enhanced by the perfeXion® quality process, ensures precise geometry and 100% inspection of every tube.
This guarantees unmatched dimensional accuracy and flawless cosmetic quality, critical for safe and effective drug delivery. Whether used in vials, ampoules, syringes, or cartridges, this high-quality Type I borosilicate glass tubing minimizes the risk of dosing errors and safeguards container integrity. By eliminating defects such as airlines and wall thickness variations, FIOLAX® supports consistent dosing and sterility—critical for sensitive biologics and injectable therapies.

Water-induced stability

Drug instability, a critical issue that compromises drug efficacy and patient safety, can stem from variations in glass composition. Hence, maintaining consistent glass tubing quality is essential. SCHOTT's FIOLAX® tubing maintains constant composition over decades, across all batches, and at all global production sites. It’s verified through rigorous testing like the glass sealant test, glass grain test as per ISO and extractables analysis as per USP & Ph. Eur.
SCHOTT's uncompromising change policy, ensuring a reliable & stable product, reduces the need for frequent incoming inspections, supporting long-term drug safety and regulatory compliance.
