NEXTERION®
Future in your hands.
Customized Solutions
SCHOTT’s product group NEXTERION® offers the development of customized substrates, which are exactly adapted to the requirements of special scientific or diagnostic applications. Customization may range from using a particular material for printing a unique barcode sequence on standard substrates to developing a custom-coated substrate for microfluidic applications.
Manufacturing high-quality technical glasses is one of the SCHOTT group’s core competencies. SCHOTT produces an extremely wide range of technical glasses, including borosilicate and optical glasses. In addition, SCHOTT has great expertise in high technology glass processing and coating technologies. To offer our customers tailor-made glass substrates for their various life science applications, NEXTERION® can take full advantage of SCHOTT’s entire in-house facilities.
As longstanding manufacturer of technical glass, SCHOTT is able to maintain thorough control over all processing steps- starting with the initial glass production and ending with the product delivery. All NEXTERION® products are manufactured according to the most stringent industry standards, guaranteeing that customers receive the highest quality and most reproducible products.
The SCHOTT group produces several hundred different types of glass. The range of glass thicknesses available is very wide, ranging from 30 µm up to 254 mm depending on the glass type.
The typical glass types used for life science products include:
BOROFLOAT® 33 borosilicate glass
D263 family borosilicate glass
If another type of material is required for your application, please contact us or use our custom request form:
In addition to the standard life science formats, such as:
SBS-compliant microplate
Microscope slide
Coverslip formats in a range of shapes, dimensions and thicknesses
We offer our customers substrates exactly adapted to their special application. Typical thicknesses for NEXTERION® substrates range from 0.1 mm up to 2 mm. Custom-sized products can be produced in rectangular, square or round formats. If special tolerances are required, we will be pleased to check if we can meet your requirements.
Applying thin-film coatings to glass substrates is another SCHOTT core competence. Production takes place in an ISO class 5 clean room environment. Extremely high quality standards are maintained for surface finish, flatness, parallelism and absence of surface defects.
The coating technologies available include:
• Dip coating
• Chemical vapor deposition (CVD)
• Sputter deposition
• Solvent-based reactor method
• Spin coating
Any of the standard NEXTERION® functional coatings can be applied to just about any custom format. The coatings include:
• Aminosilane
• Aldehydesilane
• Epoxysilane
• 3-D Hydrogel and 3-D Polymer (NHS ester) and
• Streptavidin
NEXTERION® also offers its diagnostic partners to develop a custom coating or to coat the substrates with coating chemicals developed by clients.
SCHOTT can offer customers the opportunity to customize their substrates with graphics, logos, company names, barcodes, reference marks, 2-D matrix codes, etc. These markings may be added at any location on or within the glass surface, and may feature a combination of items, for example a company logo plus a sequential barcode.
SCHOTT can offer a number of methods for marking glass substrates. The markings are robust enough to withstand standard biomedical laboratory procedures.
Laser-bonded foil method produces robust surface markings in black.
A method of printing with hydrophobic ink can be used to produce graphics, logos and multi-well patterns.
Laser ablation process produces robust marks on the surface of the glass.
Laser-induced internal marking introduces markings by the creation of micro-cavities within the glass.

Multi-well substrates allow the parallel analysis of multiple biological samples against focused subsets of probes. The multi-well format permits a number of versatile assay designs such as multiplexed experiments, side-by-side comparisons or replicate experiments to be performed. Therefore NEXTERION® offers glass substrates partitioned by an ultra-hydrophobic patterning layer. The black patterning material creates the individual wells that act as a hydrophobic barrier preventing cross contamination between the arrays. The well pattern may also serve as a registration aid for probe deposition.
The hydrophobic patterning is available with most of the NEXTERION® standard functional coatings.
Standard formats:
16- or 48-well slide format
96- or 384-well plate format
The customization of the hydrophobic patterning can also be offered to separate the substrate into exactly the shape and number of wells your application is requiring.
Please contact us or use our custom request form.
NEXTERION® also offers a small range of accessories in standard formats for multiplexed arraying, e.g. self-adhesive superstructures and incubation chambers for increasing the volume per well, or plate holders for processing the substrates. Please contact us for your special request:
To fulfil the needs of very small substrates, SCHOTT has introduced the option of standard-sized substrates pre-scored into the final chip size. To separate at that step of the process chain, the final chip size is needed.
Advantages:
Available with NEXTERION® standard coatings as well as custom coatings
Comfortable and cost-effective processing in standard size for the customer (no adaption of standard processing equipment required, e.g. spotting, hybridization)
Cost-effective production, storage and handling by manufacturing with standard production equipment
With our extensive experience in high-technology glass processing and a variety of in-house facilities, we are pleased to support you with tailor-made solutions for microfluidic applications.
