A Mixture of Know-how and High-quality Ingredients

That’s the secret behind floated specialty glass types from SCHOTT. The company relies not only on its vast expertise in the area of high-temperature melting and forming, but also on its unique microfloat technology to manufacture high-performance, silicate-based flat glasses at its site in Jena. SCHOTT celebrated an important birthday in November; the company put its first microfloat facility into operation back in November 1993 and floated the world’s first borosilicate glass. Today, this product is known all over the world under the name BOROFLOAT®, which stands for versatility and reliable quality. This microfloat facility also produces the extremely strong Xensation® Cover aluminosilicate glass for use in electronic devices that feature touch technology. <

Multilayer Ceramic for High-Frequency Applications

SCHOTT develops and manufactures housings for highly sophisticated high-frequency applications. The latest product is an HTCC ceramic feedthrough for QSFP transceivers for 100 Gbit short distance communications. The miniaturized feedthroughs ensure an extremely high density interconnect solution for this high-frequency interface that delivers excellent HF performance. Key areas of application include fiber optic networks for data communications and enterprise data centers, as well as defense and aerospace. <

Prefillable Polymer Syringe for Infusion Therapy

SCHOTT has expanded its range of SCHOTT TopPac® polymer prefillable syringes with a 20 ml format that can be used in combination with syringe pumps for infusion therapy. TopPac® prefillable syringes are compatible with various syringe pumps, and the exact outer diameter enables automated recognition by the syringe pumps. They are also compatible with intravenous devices, i. e. needleless luer access devices (NLADs). Optimized siliconization ensures consistent gliding forces for smooth drug application and also reduces the interaction of silicone with the drug during its shelf life. <

Saunas with NEXTREMA™

The Austrian company sentiotec, a full-service supplier of wellness products that include sauna heaters and related supplies, is installing NEXTREMATM glass-ceramic from SCHOTT in its infrared radiators. Thanks to its high heat resistance of up to 950 degrees Celsius, this high-performance material is extremely well suited for installation as a cover for the radiators. The white glassceramic in particular is quite popular with users because it filters out a good share of the infrared A (IRA) radiation that causes wrinkling of the skin. <

Hybrid Chip for Cell Imaging

Sony DADC BioSciences, a global leader in the manufacturing of microstructured polymer products, and SCHOTT have pooled their expertise to develop a novel glass-polymer cell detection slide for high resolution cell imaging. This extremely robust and ultra-thin glass-plastic hybrid is ideal for confocal microscopy applications and delivers superior performance with respect to its flatness, thin chamber design and lowest background fluorescence. Additional products based on the hybrid design are expected to follow. <

Anti-Reflective Glasses Protect Masterpieces by Dürer

The Frankfurt Städel Museum will be presenting an impressive exhibition on the universal genius Albrecht Dürer entitled ”Dürer. Art – Artist – Context” from now until the beginning of February 2014. One of his most important woodcuts from the early 16th century, the three and a half meter high ”Triumphal Arch for Emperor Maximilian I,” will be shown in its entirety. The 36 sheets of paper that make up the masterpiece are protected by nearly invisible AMIRAN® glass panes from SCHOTT. Thanks to its high-tech, anti-reflective coating on both sides, the glass permits up to 98 percent of the light to pass through unhindered and free from reflections. SCHOTT also supplied 16 panes of anti-reflective, fully transparent MIROGARD® Protect for framing other smaller works by Dürer. The glass reduces reflections within the visible spectrum to less than one percent and is completely neutral in color to fully preserve the brilliance of the glazed artworks and render them in true color. Furthermore, an integrated protective foil protects against harmful UV light.

Foundation Professorship Supported

Starting with the winter semester 2013, the Carl Zeiss Foundation, the sole owner of SCHOTT AG in Mainz and Carl Zeiss AG in Oberkochen, will be offering a foundation professorship on ”Solid State Body Research – Oxidic Materials” at the University of Mainz. This will further extend the cooperation that started more than 20 years ago and has generated many new impulses in the area
of material development. The focus of the foundation professorship will be on the development of sustainable functional materials that have specific application profiles and conserve resources in an area like modern energy technology, for instance.

HelioJet Approved for the Airbus A320

The first development that has arisen from the collaboration between Lufthansa Tech-
nik and SCHOTT, the LED aircraft cabin lighting system HelioJet, can now be experienced on actual flights. The European aviation authority EASA recently granted approval by issuing a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the A320 family. Now, HelioJet can be found in an Airbus A319 that flies continental routes. Thanks to its white light, it creates an extremely homogeneous and pleasant atmosphere on board and significantly reduces maintenance costs. The product requires only about one-fifth as many light-emitting diodes as other LED solutions. <
