Joint Manufacturing of Solar Wafers

SCHOTT and Wacker Chemie AG cooperate

SCHOTT Solar GmbH and Wacker Chemie AG have founded two joint ventures aimed at manufacturing and marketing silicon wafers for the solar industry. In total, SCHOTT and WACKER will be investing some 370 million euros at the German sites in Jena and Alzenau and creating at least 700 new jobs. WACKER SCHOTT Solar GmbH. will produce multicrystalline silicon blocks (ingots) and wafers, the starting material for the production of solar cells. Plans call for gradual expansion of the solar wafer manufacturing capacity to around one gigawatt per year by 2012. The second joint venture is devoted to sales activities.
