There is hardly a tool more important for increasing knowledge than asking questions. From childhood, sayings like “there is no such thing as a stupid question” encourage us to continually increase our knowledge of the world around us. All too often, more than one person has been thinking about the same question without anyone daring to ask it. So, by asking “the stupid question,” you can actually help others.

To celebrate, we want to answer a question about our glass fibers.

#GlassFacts: How many kilometers of glass fibers are drawn at SCHOTT each year?

Glass fibers can transport bundled light or images. Thanks to their extreme heat resistance, flexibility and chemical resistance, they can be used to bring light to otherwise hidden places, and thus make them visible. Application areas include endoscopy, spectroscopy and sensing.

During production, the glass fibers are drawn from glass systems consisting of core and cladding glasses. As the bottom end is heated, the speed of the drawing process determines the thickness of the individual fibers. In most cases, they are thinner than a human hair. Using this approach, SCHOTT draws several million kilometers of glass fibers every year. Amazingly, these fibers would reach more than ten times to the moon and back if they were all laid end to end.

Although the glass fibers manufactured by SCHOTT are offered in a versatile range of products and you will find a great deal of information on our website, questions still tend to arise. If you need to know more about adaptations, compatibility or technical details, SCHOTT is very happy to answer these and any other questions you have.
