Perfect Aesthetic properties

Patients’ requirements regarding aesthetics of dental restorations are rising continuously. Due to the excellent transparency of glass, the composite filling can be adapted perfectly to the natural tooth color by adding special pigments. Furthermore, dental fillings that contain very fine glass powder particles can be polished more easily - for a smooth and shiny smile.
    
High Durability    

As a substitute for tooth enamel – which in fact is the hardest substance in the human body – dental fillings are exposed to immense stress. The chewing muscle is the strongest human muscle and puts an enormous amount of pressure on our teeth. An optimal mixture of larger and ultra-fine glass particles enables a tighter filler loading of the glass ionomer powder as part of the dental composite. This leads to exceptional pressure resistance.
Glass for Teeth - How Dental Glass is Formed
  1. Glass “ribbons”, which consist of casted and quenched specialty
    glass are ground in a multilevel process.
  2. By grinding the glass to SCHOTT NanoFine® level, a particle size of
    only 180 nanometers in diameter can be produced.
  3. Dental composites consist of up to 80% glass powders and a liquid
    resin mixture. By using very fine pigment shades, the filling can be
    individually adapted to the natural dental material.
  4. The liquid composite can be applied layer by layer to the cavity by
    using a dental syringe.
  5. In most cases, dental curing is usually done by light. The glass
    powder offers optimal mechanical and optical properties.

For more than 40 years, SCHOTT has been developing highly pure glass ionomer powders for the dental industry. To achieve very small grain sizes with excellent transparency, the production of the glasses has to comply with high purity requirements. For this reasons, the dental glasses are melted within a special unit, which is normally used for glasses with optical quality.
