Feedthroughs for Airbag Ignitors and Seatbelt Pretensioners

Product Description

Airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are among the most well-known safety devices. Both of these types of equipment are based on similar operating principles: in the event of a collision, the crash sensors transmit an electrical signal to the inflator, which then initiates the ignitor charge.

In airbags, this ignitor charge ensures that the gas generator rapidly delivers large quantities of gas into the airbag; in seatbelt pretensioners, this charge activates the retractor mechanism, which continues tightening the belt until the passenger has settled in a specific seating position and the risk of injury has been minimized.
In both cases, it is extremely important that the ignitor is protected long-term so that these vital components will continue to be able to function at all times irrespective of the age of the vehicle.

The electrical signal to the dry and safely encapsulated ignitor is transmitted through a hermetic ignitor feedthrough. Our airbag ignitor feedthroughs are made from glass-to-metal sealed technology. It is manufactured in pressure glazing technology where the different expansion coefficients of the outer metal, the glass and power pins are used to achieve a robust component during the cooling phase in the sealing process.

The combination of glass and metal supports protection of the the electronic feedthroughs so that they are totally isolated from their surroundings and permanently sealed. The materials used for the airbag ignitor feedthroughs are highly resistant to temperature fluctuations, vibrations and other physical and chemical influences.

We are familiar with the construction techniques used worldwide in this field. Therefore, we are able to adapt both airbag ignitor feedthroughs and seatbelt pretensioner headers to customer requirements.

Airbag ignitor feedthroughs are suitable for all applications that require reliable, long-term transmission of an electrical signal for the ignition of hermetically sealed explosive loads. Other areas of application include battery cut-offs.

Technical Details

To enable reliable hermeticity of airbag ignitor feedthroughs and seatbelt pretensioners, glass-to-metal sealing technology is used. Please click on this page for more information.

The type of glass and metal used differs, depending on the customer’s requirements and the type of feedthrough required. Very often, these feedthroughs are produced using steel and stainless steel, due to their high resistance to corrosion. Other options include nickel and/or gold plating in compliance with the latest automotive industry standards.

Features / Specifications

Glass-metal feedthroughs can be extremely resistant to pressure (up to 4,000 bar). The fused-in pins can have torques of up to 400 Newtons.
