SCHOTT launches static ceramic converters for superior luminance in the U.S.

New ceramic material is a strong enabler for compact laser light applications

The trend of the worldwide lighting solutions market is more and more focusing on laser light. These technologies promise manufacturers applications with superior performance in a smaller package, but also – thanks to innovative materials - to optimize performance and reliability of the light sources. Especially for laser-pumped phosphor light sources, experts from the international technology group SCHOTT have developed unique phosphor ceramic converter assemblies, which offer high irradiance and superior luminance. After its successful launch at the CIOE in China last year, SCHOTT will present an advanced static ceramic converters product line at the SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco, California, Feb. 4- 6, 2020. (South Hall, Booth #841) . Integrated on a heat spreader, they enable innovative, compact light sources without moving parts. During the SPIE Photonics West conference program, Dr. Volker Hagemann, Senior Application Manager Ceramic Converters at SCHOTT, will talk about the product and its impact on laser pumped phosphor light sources used in digital projection and specialty lighting.
“The 100 percent inorganic ceramic converter material is soldered on the heat spreader to allow high power use. Our solution provides excellent and sustainable heat management to conduct the heat out of the ceramic. Therefore the brighter solution from SCHOTT offers the highest luminance as well as reliability and a high irradiance limit,” explains application expert Dr. Volker Hagemann. “With the static ceramic converter, our customers can realize many different product designs and address applications with extremely high brightness.”

SCHOTT´s ceramic converters are qualified by numerous customers and have been widely adopted for use in powerful digital laser-phosphor projectors. They also provide interesting solutions for other applications, such as in searchlights, medical lighting like endoscopy, life science, or stage lighting.

“The ceramic converters enable lighting innovations wherever superior luminance is critical and create new opportunities for product designers in all areas of laser pumped phosphor-based lighting,” Hagemann said. The standard heat spreader dimensions are 20 x 20 x 4 millimeters. Two different standard geometries of heat spreaders are available and customized formats are available on request. The material offers outstanding performance with exceptional reliability, is extremely temperature stable and heat conductive. It combines the properties of a ceramic with a highly efficient light conversion.

Differently doped fluorescent ceramics convert blue laser light into high luminescent yellow, green and white light. In the case of green or yellow light, the blue laser light is applied via a dichroic mirror. The residual blue light that is reflected from the sample is blocked. The pure emission spectrum of green or yellow light serves applications like digital projection or stage lighting. For the white light generation, the material is designed for diffuse reflection of just the right portion of blue light to meet the desired color coordinates. 

SCHOTT offers static converters for different applications. If the yellow or green light of the luminescent emission is needed, green or yellow converters fit best to an optical setup with a dichroic beam splitter. If white light is needed a "tilted lower beam" setup in combination with a white converter is recommended.
