Kitchen of the future – discover the joy of cooking with SCHOTT CERAN® at AWE 2019

SCHOTT AG, international technology group and the original inventor of black glass-ceramic cooktop panels, is bringing its three-time “Brand of the Century” award winner SCHOTT CERAN® to Appliance and Electronics World Expo 2019 (Hall N2, booth 2F71, Shanghai New International Expo Centre, 14-17 March). As one of the highlight booths of the German Kitchen Pavilion by AMK (German Association of Modern Kitchen Industry), SCHOTT will present its newest light-inspired CERAN EXCITE® portfolio – one of the most recent iF Gold Award 2019 winners. Moreover, the company will display the smart FUSICS cooking table prototype, designed for an elevated cooking experience even in limited urban spaces. Through its innovative products, SCHOTT CERAN® is supporting the trend, which is moving from cooking on gas to cooking on induction, while paving the way for the kitchen of the future.
From outer space to modern kitchens since 1971

Known for its energy efficiency, stability and durability, SCHOTT CERAN® has been a world bestseller that sold over 150 million products since its launch. The company first developed the black glass-ceramic for use as a mirror substrate in space telescopes, and found it to be incredibly heat resistant with almost no thermal expansion. This inspired SCHOTT to bring this material into the kitchen and revolutionize the way cooking was done. Since 1971, SCHOTT CERAN® shapes modern kitchen designs of Western cuisines with its clean and sophisticated look – and is now conquering the hearts of consumers in China.

SCHOTT CERAN® can be combined with all available heating technologies (induction, radiant heat and gas) and is used by a number of leading home appliance manufacturers, including Siemens, Bosch, MIJI, Fotile, or Rinnai. The CERAN® glass-ceramic cooktop withstands sudden temperature shocks in the range of up to 700 degrees Celsius without difficulty. Its energy-efficiency in combination with radiant heating is higher than 70%, and can even reach over 80% with induction. The glass-ceramic, which is particularly easy to clean, is also sustainable and manufactured in Germany without using toxic heavy metal additives such as arsenic and antimony.

Cooking in a new light

To make cooking smarter and more intuitive, SCHOTT developed CERAN EXCITE®. This latest innovation, based on special materials and coatings, allows LED light sources mounted under the cooktop to shine through particularly clearly and brightly – allowing endless design possibilities and improvements to form and function. For example, white light appears four times brighter than with conventional glass-ceramic.

By enabling colored lighting of the control panels and cooking zones, induction cooking can now be done with clear visual feedback. This includes the cooking zones lit up with different colors and designs, drawing attention to them and offering more safety, intuitive control and connectivity. This new technology has already been adopted by leading brands, who are able to realize customized solutions for interactive and exciting induction hobs, and was recently awarded with the renowned iF Gold Award 2019 in the “kitchen” category. The materials can be supplemented with coating and filter solutions that enhance the color location of light elements, light shaping and homogeneous light distribution.

CERAN EXCITE® is being introduced to the market at a time when modern consumers are looking for more than mere basic functionality. They want experience. Recent market studies have found that more and more Chinese consumers are pursuing a high quality of life, placing high importance on functional integration, quality, intelligence and emotional connectedness in their choice of kitchen appliance[1].

A smart kitchen concept for modern urban dwellers

Taking inspirations beyond the actual cooking surface and into the surrounding kitchen areas, SCHOTT CERAN®´s FUSICS approach stands exactly for what modern consumers want: function, urbanism, sustainability, illumination, connectivity and social experience. The concept supports China’s growing smart home market, which is expecting a compound annual growth rate of 21.4%2, as well as the trend of 77.9% of young Chinese consumers willing to invest more into renovating their kitchen space3 for designs that are aware of the living space as a whole.

The FUSICS prototype uses the highly versatile SCHOTT CERAN® glass-ceramic cooking surfaces to create integrated multi-functional cooktops with smart home connectivity and was presented with the 2018 kbbreview Retail & Design Award as "Product Innovation of the Year" in the category of kitchens. The table features an interactive cooking app on a multi-touch display. A dynamic list of ingredients, recipes and matching tutorials turn cooking into an interactive experience. The built-in Near-Field Sensor uses lights to mark cooking areas as soon as the cook comes near.

SCHOTT successfully held the “SCHOTT in the Kitchen” innovation roundtable on 7th March 2019, Shanghai, where attending media were introduced to SCHOTT’s latest developments in kitchen technology and its outlook on the Chinese market. The public and industry players are invited to experience the magic of SCHOTT CERAN® at AWE, Hall N2, booth 2F71, German Kitchen Pavilion of Shanghai New International Expo Centre from 14-17 March, where SCHOTT will be exhibiting its state-of-the-art SCHOTT CERAN® products.
