Dr. Ulrich Fotheringham´s research now honored by the American Ceramic Society
Congratulations! The German SCHOTT glass expert Dr. Ulrich Fotheringham (RD) has been named one of 15 new Fellows of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) – he is thus the first German SCHOTT researcher elevated to Fellow of the ACerS. The 2017 class of Fellows was recognized on October 9, 2017, in Pittsburgh Pa. at the Society’s Annual Meeting by ACers president William Lee and president-elect Mike Alexander. The American Ceramic Society is the leading professional membership organization for ceramic, glass and materials scientists, engineers, researchers, manufacturers, plant personnel, educators, and students. “We are very proud that Ulrich Fotheringham has now been elevated to Fellow of this renowned association. The fellowship stresses his outstanding contribution to glass science and technology,” says SCHOTT research fellow Dr. Roland Langfeld.

Dr. Ulrich Fotheringham is Senior Principal Scientist in the material development department of SCHOTT. He received his diploma in Physics in 1987 and a PhD in Physics from Johannes Gutenberg  University in Mainz.  Dr. Fotheringham joined SCHOTT in 1987 as a PhD student and developed a theory for single-mode communication fibers. Highlights of his subsequent work are the theory of “active thermal conductivity”, contributions to the topics “glass transition” and “radiative heat transfer” as well as novel hot forming and annealing processes based upon the former research. His current research interests include non-equilibrium thermodynamics, structure-property relationships and material modeling in inorganic glass. Dr. Fotheringham´s published work includes 20 granted patents and over 40 journal articles, book chapters and conference papers. In addition, he is Deputy Chair of the Technical Committee I of the “Deutsche Glastechnische Gesellschaft”.
