SCHOTT Ultra-thin glass reduces errors in optical Diagnostic and Life Science applications
SCHOTT expands its product portfolio of glass wafers and substrates for the biotech and life sciences industry with D 263® bio, which is perfectly suited for a wide range of biotech and optical diagnostics applications.Emerging optical diagnostics applications used in microfluidics and genome sequencing typically incorporate fluorescent markers to visualize the presence of specimen artifacts. However, the background fluorescence of substrate materials – as well as improper cleaning – can cause signal degradation and lab errors.
The international technology group SCHOTT has now introduced D 263® bio, a borosilicate glass that is well-suited for use as a substrate glass in biotech and life science applications requiring high luminous transmittance and easy processability.
Homogeneously low autofluorescence
“The D 263® bio glass offers very low autofluorescence homogeneously across its entire transmission range,” says Fredrik Prince, the responsible product and business development manager at SCHOTT.
Contemporary optical analytic protocols—like those used with lab-on-a-chip, genome sequencing or other microfluidic components—often have demanding physical, chemical and optical requirements. In addition to concerns over autofluorescence, temperature and pressure cycles challenge the mechanical stability and reliability of such components during the process or over time.
The new D 263® bio meets these challenges by building on a proven legacy in optical diagnostics as set by D 263® M, the leading material for microscopy coverslips since 1963.
It is nearly identical in its main constituents to the D 263® M, but it meets more stringent surface and geometry specifications of demanding microfluidic assemblies.
Cut and cleaned to advanced semiconductor wafer or substrate standards, it is well-suited to biotech and life science applications and manufacturing processes requiring glass substrates of high luminous transmittance, easy processability and a range of thicknesses - between ultra-thin 0.175 µm and 1.1 mm.
Proven components rethought
SCHOTT, with more than 130 years of optical glass experience, has a long-standing history in producing thin glass with various proprietary production processes. The D 263® product family consists of glass types produced in a special down-draw process that guarantees two fire-polished surfaces with a pristine surface roughness in popular thicknesses, thus eliminating the need to polish. With high optical transmission qualities, chemical resistance and the ability to chemically toughen the material, this product family has gained a firm place in numerous life sciences and consumer applications.
