Design the future of cooking – with “Cooking FUSICS”

How will we cook in the future? SCHOTT CERAN®’s international design competition looks to reinterpret the cooking surface and the space around it.
The time has come to look beyond the glass-ceramic edge: the SCHOTT CERAN® Design Awards are once again calling on creative cooking space designers. This year’s focus is primarily on the space next to, below, above and around the cooking surface. Cash prizes totaling EUR 11,000 await the best design ideas, along with the opportunity for international presentation. Participation through our partner Designboom runs through the end of July.

“Designers today have to think urban and pragmatic to consider increasingly smaller cooking and dining areas and to digitally connect them,” explains Björn Weller, Marketing Director of SCHOTT CERAN®. “These awards are a chance for creators to show their talent as well as an opportunity for us to find out how designers will interpret cooking spaces in the future. After all, we want to provide the right materials for these ideas.”

The material of glass-ceramic is at the heart of the competition. Experimenting with its color and shape as well as its combination with functional properties creates new possibilities for modern kitchen environments. “Ultimately, everything revolves around one thing: the person who’s cooking. Alone, with family and friends, in a hurry, taking your time, traditional dishes or specialties from all over the world. Whatever the case may be, the modern kitchen has to reflect it – and glass-ceramic like SCHOTT CERAN® forms the starting material,” says Weller.

Renowned jury

This will be the third time the SCHOTT CERAN® Design Awards have been held, but for the first time, they will be hosted worldwide. “Cooking FUSICS” is the motto for 2017, aiming to take inspiration beyond the actual cooking surface and into the surrounding kitchen space. “FUSICS” stands for function, urbanism, sustainability, illumination, connectivity and social experience.

Drafts may be submitted until July 31. Creative thinkers at least 18 years old are invited to participate – regardless if you’re an architect, graphic designer, product designer, student, young professional or professional designer. SCHOTT will exhibit select winning concepts internationally following the competition.
A renowned jury of designers, architects and cooking experts from all over the world will evaluate the designs, including product designer Sebastian Conran and ‘design hunter’ Helen Powell from the UK.
Designer and jury member Robert Cristinetti says: “More and more demands are being placed on design today. Simply looking good isn’t enough anymore. Functionality, sustainability and connectivity play important roles. We’re very excited to find out what’s beyond this glass-ceramic edge called ‘Cooking FUSICS.’”
