Modern refrigerators, vending machines and air conditioners are using environmentally-friendly refrigerants like CO2 (carbon dioxide): CO2 is energy-saving, and does not contribute to global warming as much as the conventional refrigerants such as CFCs (chlorofluorocarbon) or FCs (fluorocarbon). But compressors utilizing CO2 operate at pressures and temperatures (up to 180°C) much higher than classical compressors. Glass-to-metal sealed compressor terminals from NEC SCHOTT offer a reliable solution: They provide an electrical conducting terminal and, at the same time, function as a hermetic “closure” for the compressor, protecting the internal components from undesirable ambient influences, as well as preventing any leakage of the refrigerants from within. NEC SCHOTT is going to present its innovative compressor terminals at the Chillventa in Nuremberg, from October 11 to 13, 2016 (hall 4A; both 503).

Modern sustainability along with power demands means that compressors using CO2 have to function at extremely high pressures – more than five times higher than classical compressors. In order to work, the electrical connection of the system, the compressor terminals, have to function reliably over the product´s lifetime. They protect on the one hand the internal components of the compressor from external influences and, on the other hand, prevent any leakage of the refrigerants from within. Besides electronic vehicles, hybrid electronic vehicles, air conditioners and vending machines, refrigerators are also switching to environmentally-friendly refrigerants. In addition to the higher level of CO2 pressure, these appliances already have unique demands: Its doors are opened regularly. That means that a refrigerator compressor seal has to withstand almost regular compressor fluctuations.

Glass-to-metal sealed compressor terminals are vacuum-tight electrical feedthroughs consisting of a metal base and glass elements which are hermetically sealing the metal leads to the base. A strong hermetic seal is possible due to the compressive stress that the eyelet exerts upon the glass seal. Ordinary compressor terminals sealed with polymers and are not able to withstand such force and harsh environmental conditions like humidity, vibration or chemical influences. Instead, an air-tight glass-to-metal seal is a reliable solution. And, another plus: „Our high-quality compressor terminals are customer-designed and manufactured specifically for each compressor system,“ means Shuji Okutani, General Manager for Compressor at NEC SCHOTT Components.
