Noble and pure – and anything but black: The winners of the CERAN® Design Awards provide insights into trendy cooktop panel designs

Must cooktop panels always be black? Well, not really. The winners of the CERAN® Design Awards impressively demonstrated how colors ranging from ivory to anthracite can truly enhance the cooking area. “I was completely surprised at how many options glass-ceramic offers as a material,” says young designer Hanh Phan, the winner of the competition. She relied on the basic color “CLEAR flamingo,” a trendy rosé gold with a metallic effect, and a minimalist design consisting of reduced, yet clean lines for her entry entitled “OnLines.” Her design will be produced as a limited edition by Bauknecht and marketed exclusively by our trading partner Otto.

Design and the kitchen have gone hand in hand for years now. Therefore, it only makes good sense for designers and appliance manufacturers to also include the cooktop panel in their concepts, jury member and designer Robert Cristinetti is convinced. “The winning design is comprised of a surprisingly harmonious color combination that will definitely open up new possibilities in the context of the kitchen. The functional aspects are quite reduced, yet clearly stated, however. This balance between the warmth of the colors and the strict nature of the graphics really convinced us.”

A material that goes along every design path

This design diversity is made possible by a CERAN® glass-ceramic from SCHOTT that has been designed specifically for induction cookers and comes with a special feature: it is transparent. Various underside printing techniques provide for a luxurious look and countless design variations. Purist designs in stainless steel, metal and matte appearance are made possible by using specially developed, environmentally friendly colors ranging from ivory to dark grey.

The glass-ceramic manufacturer thus pays tribute to a significant furnishing trend. “In today’s kitchens, the cooktop panel is no longer just a functional object. It has to fit into its environment harmoniously for the concept of space to be used perfectly,” says expert Cristinetti. SCHOTT creates possibilities for kitchen appliance manufacturers to take this route with its new design options.

Award winners honored in Berlin parallel to IFA 2016

According to Björn Weller, who is responsible for marketing of CERAN® at SCHOTT, this trend is clearly reflected in most of the designs that were submitted. “The transparent glass-ceramic served as the basis for the designs. Besides, we gave the participants a few guidelines on what is technically possible,” he adds.

An eight-member expert jury selected the winners from the 68 entries received from students and young professionals from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The winner Hanh Phan received 3,000 euros in prize money. Second prize, which was worth 2,000 euros, went to Victoria Schwarz for her design “Flashing dots.” She was followed by Mariano Gemmo, who came in third place with his design “Kochen ist Kommunikation” and received 1,000 euros in prize money. The competition entry “Quadrophil” submitted by Lena Kilian received the Special SCHOTT Award and 1,000 euros. Olivia Nigl won the People’s Choice Award valued at 3,000 euros for “Capacité” that an online voting on the social media channels of SCHOTT CERAN® decided on.
All of the winning designs were produced and presented at a pop-up gallery at IFA 2016 in Berlin.
