Run for 201,000 euros for children

The anniversary “Run for Children” in Mainz was a great success.
The charity “Run for Children” was held at the TSV SCHOTT stadium in Mainz, Germany, for the tenth time this past Saturday. The event generated 201,000 euros in proceeds. These funds will be given to charity aid organizations that support ill, handicapped and socially disadvantaged children on July 1. The Run for Children has been organized since 2006 at the initiative and with the support of SCHOTT AG.

91 teams with more than 3,200 runners participated in this year’s anniversary run and ran rounds around the 400 m track. The Schlossrunners, a team of high school students from Schloss Gymnasium in Mainz that has already won the race five times, managed to run the most rounds (467). Altogether the teams ran 29,653 rounds. This equates to the impressive distance of 11,681 km or roughly the aerial distance between Mainz and Buenos Aires in Argentina. The team sponsors paid at least one euro per round into the donations pot. Furthermore, quite a few companies, banks, and foundations also made generous contributions as sponsors and partners. Since the first run was held in 2006, the total donations amount has now reached nearly 1.38 million euros.

To celebrate its tenth anniversary, the charity run kicked off with a lap of honor that was run by children who participated in projects that were financed with donations from the Run for Children in recent
years. At the award ceremony, the Chairman of the Board of Management, Dr. Frank Heinricht, the Chief Organizer, Salvatore Ruggiero, and the mascot SCHOTTi presented awards not only to this year’s winning teams of runners, but also special awards to teams of runners, team sponsors, and other sponsors who have been supporting the run ever since it was first held for their many years of support.

Dr. Heinricht drew a positive balance: “The festive opening round with so many children who have benefited from these donations in the past was extremely emotional and moving. I was extremely impressed at how much passion the runners showed as they ran their rounds to generate such a high amount of donations with their physical performance.”
