New protective glazing for Neuschwanstein

Just in time for the 175th birthday of King Ludwig II, the interior renovation of the Singers' Hall in Neuschwanstein Castle was completed. To ensure that a true-to-original view of the outside world is also possible, SCHOTT is helping to protect the four lead glass windows in the hall from the elements with AMIRAN® Heritage Protect anti-reflective exterior protective glazing.

Mainz, October 14, 2020 - After completion of the nearly two-year renovation work, the Singers' Hall at Neuschwanstein Castle is sparkling and shining again. Time and millions of visitors had left their mark on the state room and made the extensive restoration necessary. While the interior work continues in the throne room, the singers' hall is still awaiting a final touch-up: the exterior protective glazing. Because in addition to dust and dirt from inside, extreme weather conditions and UV radiation from the outside also affect the historic lead glass windows. 

The anti-reflective protective glazing for historic facades from the glass specialist SCHOTT now provides a remedy. Applied as an outer pane, the robust and weather-resistant coating of AMIRAN® Heritage Protect shields the original lead glass windows from environmental influences. At the same time, its optical properties ensure a clear view. The so-called "hard coating" reduces disturbing reflections to a minimum and, thanks to its high color rendering index, prevents unwanted color distortions of the lead glazing. So the next million visitors can also photograph and enjoy the charm of the historic windows from every angle. 

Preserve cultural assets, meet modern demands

In order to reconcile monument protection with building physics and safety, the processing of glass into modern standard building products is an important issue for the international technology group. High buildings such as Neuschwanstein Castle, for example, place special demands on the anti-reflective coating of the exterior glazing. While anti-reflective glass is usually optimized for a viewing angle of 90° - as known from paintings in museums, for example - special production is required for the glazing of the windows in the Singers' Hall. In order to prevent a reflective façade when looking at the lock from below, AMIRAN® Heritage Protect, a layer design developed by SCHOTT specifically for protective glazing, is used that enables minimal reflections, color neutrality and the highest possible transmissions at a viewing angle of 45°.

Every historical building is unique. And places the most diverse demands on the glazing. With individual solutions, the glass specialist helps to ensure the authentic appearance of windows and facades. If necessary, even with specific stylistic features of contemporary eras: For example, the colorless SCHOTT GOETHEGLAS preserves the characteristic, irregular surface of window glass from the 18th and 19th centuries. RESTOVER® has the wavy structure of window glass from the early 19th century. And TIKANA®, in turn, has the typical pull-strip of windows of classical modern and Bauhaus-style buildings. This allows architects and planners to focus on preserving the historical features of cultural assets while meeting current building requirements.
