SCHOTT: Perfect partner for algae projects
SCHOTT will be presenting glass photobioreactors and their applications in agriculture and industry at the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture (GFIA) (February 5-6, 2018) in Abu Dhabi. A proven partner of the algae industry, the international technology group equips microalgae producers with high-quality glass components for photobioreactors, enabling innovative and sustainable solutions from biomass production to biological wastewater treatment.Microalgae convert light into biomass much more efficiently than land plants, representing an interesting future market for agriculture and industry. Their valuable ingredients lead to applications in dietary supplements, food, feed and fertilizer. Microalgae also have another advantage: the green protozoa absorb pollutants in the photosynthetic process, functioning as wastewater filters.
Glass photobioreactors have a proven advantage when it comes to harvest quantity in microalgae cultivation. “Glass tube systems foster highly efficient algae cultivation. Glass has a long service life, doesn’t pollute and is highly transparent – critical influences on performance and cost in algae production,” says Fritz Wintersteller, Director of Business Development at SCHOTT AG. On the second day of the conference (February 6, 2018, 1:15 - 2:30), Wintersteller will explain what predestines glass tubes for algae cultivation in his presentation entitled “Tubular Glass Photobioreactors: Why glass tubes are trusted and proven by the algae industry?” Conference visitors will also learn various ways of designing glass tube photobioreactors at booth C20 of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center.
The annual GFIA aims to promote sustainable innovations in food production. Products and methods on exhibit and up for discussion promise to increase agricultural crop yield, save water or counteract climate change.
SCHOTT has supported numerous projects in the algae industry for many years. It has recently been involved in microalgae producer ecoduna’s hectare-sized vertical plant currently under construction in Austria. SCHOTT is supplying its photobioreactors with 43,000 DURAN® glass tubes. These will support ecoduna’s aim of achieving an annual output of about 100 tons of dry biomass from various algal strands.
Treating water with microalgae also produces valuable biomass. American company CLEARAS Water Recovery has developed a special nutrient recovery process (ABNR™) that breaks down wastewater into clean water and reusable biomass. SCHOTT supplies the high-quality glass tubes for these photobioreactors as well.
