Innovative ceramic converters are accelerating the breakthrough of laser phosphor based professional digital projectors

Clear forecast: By 2020, one-third of all projectors will no longer be using conventional lamps, but rather solid state lighting (SSL) such as laser diodes and LEDs. There are good reasons for this; SSL systems promise reliable performance, specifically in terms of brightness and color, that remains constant over time, without the need to change bulbs which significantly lowers the total cost of ownership and energy costs. The highest potential is offered by laser pumped phosphor light sources. These light sources reach luminance densities that are more than two times higher than the sun’s luminance. These phosphors are special fluorescent ceramics that convert blue laser light into bright yellow light for this purpose.

SCHOTT experts have developed these phosphor ceramic converters for the market through a corporate business development project within the Research and Development division. The new material is extremely temperature-stable, heat-conductive and energy-efficient. Laser projectors do not require a warm-up period and are free of any environmentally harmful mercury. The basis for this is an ingenious, reproducible production process that produces reliable, quality-tested products.
