Borofloat®

BOROFLOAT® is the world's first flat borosilicate glass manufactured by the float process. Since 1994, BOROFLOAT® glass has been produced by a special float process in Jena, Germany. Today, float glass is synonymous with flawless quality and transparency. Production of BOROFLOAT® by the float process results in superior surface finish, flatness and outstanding optical quality as compared to other flat forming methods such as drawing and casting.

BOROFLOAT® has a very good homogeneity and very high transparency in the UV/visible/near IR range. The glass has low thermal expansion and high thermal resistance which make it particularly suitable for areas of application where high temperatures and thermal gradients are involved.

BOROFLOAT® is widely used as the inner panel of glass doors in self-cleaning ovens or as a cover plate in high powered floodlights and other lighting applications.

BOROFLOAT® is highly resistant to attack by water, neutral and acid solutions, strong acids and saline solutions as well as chlorine, bromine, iodine and organic substances. Also over lengthy periods and at temperatures in excess of 100°C its chemical resistance outperforms that of most metals and other materials of construction. For this reason BOROFLOAT® is the material of choice in the chemical industry for sight glasses in such applications as reaction vessels and fittings.

Only minor quantities of ions are leached from the glass by water and acid attack. This low interaction accounts for the use of BOROFLOAT® for medical and analytical purposes.

Its lower density compared with traditional window glass offers an additional benefit. It makes it possible to construct lightweight laminated glass systems. These are used for such applications as bullet-proof glass and, in certain respects, have improved bullet resistance properties compared with traditional armoured glass laminates.
