Revealing cosmic secrets
Major order for the world’s largest telescope
The 39-meter main mirror of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will be composed of 798 ZERODUR® glass-ceramic segments in the future. The European Southern Observatory (ESO) has awarded SCHOTT the contract to supply a total of 949 mirror substrates, including spare parts. After ZERODUR® components were already produced for the fourth ELT mirror in 2016, orders for the secondary and tertiary mirrors followed in early 2017. ZERODUR® has thus once again been confirmed as the standard material for mirror substrates for the world’s largest telescopes.
Ultra-thin screen protector
The world’s first mass-produced ultra-thin glass available in thicknesses of 300 to just 50 μm, SCHOTT AS 87 eco, has found its way to the retail market. The mobile phone accessory brand BLACK ROCK is now offering the ultra-thin glass SCHOTT AS 87 eco as screen protector glass for a number of smartphone models. This includes the popular series of iPhones from Apple as well as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S8. A special variation of the glass with slightly curved edges protects the outer curved exterior of the Samsung Galaxy S8 “Infinity Display”, uncompromising in its confrontations with the daily challenges mobiles face in their constant usage. The product can be found at major electronics retailers such as Media Markt and Saturn.
