Glass Technology – Specialty Glass
SCHOTT scientists have contributed numerous articles to the new guide „Specialty Glass“ of the German Museum. The area „Specialty Glass“ within the section Glass Technology of the German Museum displays for the most varied, in particular, technical applications. In contrast to “Hollow Glass Ware” and “Flat Glass” these glasses are not primarily characterized by their shape, but rather by their special properties, such as high optical purity and homogeneity, chemical durability or thermal shock resistance. The systematic investigations of the required specific compositions of raw materials and of the resulting material properties were started at the end of the 19th century by Otto Schott and established this mostly recent and scientific chapter of glass technology.

Glass Technology – Flat Glass
The guide „Flat Glass“ of the German Museum was also supported by articles from SCHOTT employees. The „Flat Glass“ area in the Glass Technology Department of the German Museum is unique in many ways. Drinking glasses and bottles are frequently found in museums, but windows, windshields and mirrors seldom serve as a central theme, although they form part of our everyday surroundings. It is even more unusual to find an explanation of how these products are made. And nowhere else are products and production processes of the past and the present so clearly explained using original equipments, models, demonstrations and interactive new media than in the German Museum. The “Flat Glass” exhibition guide gives the reader a chance to consolidate impressions gained in the museum itself. It is also a comprehensive yet compact reference book on an often overlooked but truly fascinating subject.
