SCHOTT researchers nominated for Federal President’s Prize for Innovation and Technology
Dr. Nikolaus Benz and Dr. Thomas Kuckelkorn, both from SCHOTT Solar, a subsidiary of SCHOTT AG, have been nominated for the most important innovation prize in Germany, the ‘Federal President’s Prize for Innovation and Technology’. This was announced today by the Head of the Federal Presidential Office, Secretary of State Dr. Gert Haller, at a press conference in Berlin. Under the direction of Drs. Benz and Kuckelkorn, SCHOTT has developed a receiver for solar power plants that permits even more energy to be obtained from the sun. It also prepares the way for the exploitation of new and more efficient forms of this clean energy source. "We are very pleased with this nomination and view this as clear confirmation of the high power of innovation at SCHOTT in the field of solar energy," emphasized Chairman of the Management Board of SCHOTT AG, Professor Udo Ungeheuer. SCHOTT Solar to Build Production Facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico
SCHOTT AG of Mainz and Governor Bill Richardson’s (D – NM) office today announced that the company will construct a new solar energy technology production facility in the Mesa del Sol region of Albuquerque, NM, USA.

Initially, the production site will manufacture receivers for concentrated solar thermal power plants (CSP) and 64 Megawatts of photovoltaic (PV) modules. The facility is expected to begin production in 2009 and immediately create 350 jobs. The initial investment in New Mexico by SCHOTT Solar will be on the order of $100 million.

SCHOTT Solar Inaugurates Thin-Film Production Plant in Jena
- 75 million euro investment creates 180 new jobs -
Today, SCHOTT, the technology group based in Mainz, Germany, inaugurated industrial mass production of thin-film solar modules in Jena by its subsidiary, SCHOTT Solar GmbH. By investing a total of 75 million euros towards a state-of-the art manufacturing facility with a module capacity of 33 megawatts (MW) per year, SCHOTT will be creating an additional 180 jobs at its Jena site.

With the Prime Minister of Thuringia, Dieter Althaus, in attendance, Prof. Udo Ungeheuer, Chairman of the Board of Management of SCHOTT AG, emphasized the strategic importance of this production facility: “By engaging in high-technology mass production of thin-film modules, we are creating a second source of revenue for our photovoltaic activities. As with wafer-based technology, we will now be improving our position among the world’s leading manufacturers in the field of thin-film technology, as well. Furthermore, we will be turning Jena into a site with strong solar expertise.”
