Green is “in”, but by no means only a transient fashion trend. Consciousness of how important it is to preserve our environment is literally gaining in sustainability all over the world. We are quite happy about this because it offers us incentives and confirms our own deep conviction and many years of hard work. After all, accepting responsibility for employees, society and the environment has always been one of the core values that drive us.
In 1978, SCHOTT introduced a dust removal program for glass melting tanks at its German headquarters in Mainz. Ten years later, the exhaust air from the smokestacks was more than 99 percent dust- free. Other initiatives include reducing CO2 emissions or developing processes that conserve resources and the environment.
Our cover story is not the only article that illustrates how we are striving to set an example on protecting the climate and the environment both today and in the future, however. Our activities in the area of photovoltaics, a technology that is ideally suited for local power generation, and our commitment to the pioneering Desertec initiative also reflect this. Prominent international companies have joined together to build large solar thermal power plants in the deserts of Africa and Arabia that will also supply Europe with renewable energy. SCHOTT is actively involved in this with its solar receivers, the heart of this technology.
This has not exhausted our eco-technological power of innovation quite yet, however. For the first time in the world, we managed to use the microfloat process to manufacture transparent glass-ceramics that do not contain the environmentally harmful heavy metals arsenic, antimony and barium. In addition, SCHOTT also offers a wide variety of thin glasses as eco versions for use in electronics and medical technology. Our unique housings for torque sensors even reduce fuel consumption. And we’ve launched an innovation campaign in support of our successful brand SCHOTT Ceran® that summarizes our commitment to an environmentally friendly future in two catchy words: Simply More.
