SCHOTT Group Home

Dear readers,

Prof. Dr.-Ing.
Udo Ungeheuer,
Chairman of the
Board of Management SCHOTT AG
It is commonly said that the future is written in the stars. However, this applies to the past, as well. For this very reason, astronomers are exploring the universe with the help of ever more powerful telescopes. In the past, these were used solely as aids for viewing the sky. Today, however, they mainly serve as measurement instruments. Telescopes are no longer limited to observing visible light. In fact, various instruments can be used on Earth and inside airplanes and satellites to capture the entire spectrum of electromagnetic radiation in outer space. The development of telescopes is a story full of superlatives. Systems that are becoming larger and larger in size, more light-sensitive, more precise and more sophisticated are forging ahead to enter distant galaxies. Here, SCHOTT has played a major role with its Zerodur® glass ceramic mirror substrates, which are often the „heart” of modern telescopes.

Another material that is quite similar with respect to its ability to stand up to shifts in temperature has conquered the microcosm we all know as the kitchen. In living up to our »Never stop inventing« philosophy, we at SCHOTT have our sights set on current trends, as we continue to develop our Ceran® glass ceramic cooktop panels to include new variations.

Solar energy is yet another field that SCHOTT is pursuing in an innovative and clear-sighted manner to offer a viable alternative to the inefficient use of fossil fuels, in particular, and the resulting major increases in CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Only alternative energy sources offer mankind a chance to avoid the negative consequences of global warming. Photovoltaic and solar thermal energy offer viable solutions. They rely on solar energy, an abundant resource which produces zero harmful emissions. As one of the world’s leading companies in the field of solar technology, SCHOTT is aware of its unique responsibility. For this reason, we will continue to invest all of our energy towards improving our ability to perform in this field, while also promoting the use of solar energy the world over.

I wish you enjoyable reading.

Sincerely Yours,
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Ungeheuer
