Dear readers,

The world is changing so quickly, and yet it is still difficult to forget certain events. March 11, 2011, for instance. Japan was hit by one of the most severe earthquakes in its history, then a devastating tsunami and the disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Our sympathy goes out to the Japanese people. SCHOTT’s employees here were quite fortunate because both they and their families escaped harm.

Fukushima isn’t the type of accident after which everything immediately returns back to normal. It has been fueling a debate on what energy mix we will need in the future and shifted the focus to renewable. SCHOTT offers solutions based on two key technologies: solar thermal power plants and photovoltaics. And the great job we’ve been doing can be seen in the prestigious award we received in the area of technology management for developing innovative solar modules, for example.

Climate and environmental protection are topics that concern us in many ways. This can be seen, for example, in successful Cradle to Cradle® certification of our fire-resistant Pyran® Platinum glass-ceramic. This eco-label calls for climate friendly production processes, using renewable energy and a high level of recycling activities.

Acting responsibly is an important company value that has even been written into our company’s new Vision. This calls for us to pursue an ambitious goal: “We make SCHOTT part of everyone’s life.” And we discuss how we do this on the pages that follow. For instance, with SCHOTT Xensation®, our new area of expertise ”Cover & Touch” has introduced a brand whose special glass products support all of today’s important touch technologies. This isn’t the only activity that helps us gain ground in the important Asian market, however. Thanks to our extremely durable special glass products and lighting technology , we are moving towards a future in which the up-and-coming Asian nations will play a more important role at the record speed of Chinese super express trains. The world is spinning faster – and SCHOTT is helping to design it.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition!

Sincerely Yours,
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Ungeheuer
