Thyristor control

The availability of electrical current has become a matter of course for most of us. Hardly anybody asks where the power is coming from. In many cases the current has already travelled a remarkable distance by the time it arrives at the consumer.

In order to transfer the current over these large distances with a minimum of loss, a technology called High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) is used. In times of increasing need of electrical power this technology also enables a flexible exchange of power between individual networks.

As these systems operate at voltages exceeding 800 KV regular circuit breakers will not work. Thyristors are thus used which are fired and controlled optically. For this purpose SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging has developed a high voltage resistant light conducting MK cable. These cable light guides can also be used to trigger and monitor other processes in high voltage environments.
