Being 'out' is 'in'

Just five keywords. A rather unusual interview with trend researcher Dr. Eike Wenzel.

Just five keywords. A rather unusual interview with trend researcher Dr. Eike Wenzel.

Trend

“Nature and living outdoors will be future trends. So if you want to be ‘in’ then you need to be “out”! In the yard, for example. We have observed that the trend of going outdoors is unstoppable because creating a new and unique lifestyle means distinctive enhancement. One form of that is to move your living room outdoors. Trendy people always suspend borders – currently between living indoors and going outdoors – without much effort. They smile at the old bourgeois image of privacy and living only inside one’s own four walls.”

Living

“A garden is already called a green living room. Due to this lifestyle trend, more people are relocating their center of live and pleasure outside into the garden. In the meantime, nearly every activity that normally takes place indoors is moving outdoors. But why? Because people want to spend as much time as possible outdoors. They want to literally live outdoors.”

Nature

In times of globalization, people want to experience pure native life, and simplicity. They want to get in touch with the elements of nature again. Thus, “Landlust” arises as an irresistible desire: experiencing nature while being at home in your own garden, in a familiar environment. Back to the roots so to speak. For many years, experiencing nature has been among people’s top three needs. Eating and partying outside is extremely popular. Therefore, one can find monumental beach chairs, outdoor showers and big parasols in the gardens that should bring holiday feelings home. In addition, we have noticed that people increasingly erect huge outdoor kitchens in their gardens. And they act and cook there as they do indoors.”

People are drawn to fire because it is the founder of social life. It emits light and warmth. And it is a basic element of our culture.

Future

“In the future, young families in particular will search for health, sustainability, and to reconnect with nature. Their children should get in to touch with, experience nature. They should reestablish a connection with the elements of our life: earth, air, water and fire.”

Fire

“People are drawn to fire because it is the founder of social life. It emits light and warmth. And it is a basic element of our culture. It has even created our culture and established modernity: working during the day and being together at night. People consider campfires to be romantic and are fascinated by their brightness and power. Fire is one of the most glamorous and magical experiences in life. So why not build an outdoor fireplace in your yard?”
