Thanks to a Chinese-German flagship project, the technology used in smartphones is reaching new heights: An innovative protective glass with outstanding thickness, strength and physical properties improves the effectiveness of fingerprint sensors.

Ultra-thin glass: Making fiction a reality

Dr. Feng He, manager for Electronic Application at SCHOTT China, has been working closely with several fingerprint sensor manufacturers. They have shared a dream of developing an ultra-thin strong glass for their applications which has outstanding technical properties and is environmentally friendly.

 

Feng He contacts Mario Haas, who is responsible for the production of ultra-thin glass at SCHOTT’s German plant in Gruenenplan. Haas and his team translate Feng’s initial idea into manageable production processes which support his approach.

World’s first ultra-thin, high strength glass now market ready

SCHOTT’s proprietary down-draw technology is a proven solution in mass production of mass volume aluminosilicate glass (70 – 350 µm) for many applications. No additional slimming is needed to achieve ultra-thin thickness.

Pristine fire-polished, razor-thin cover glass for clear visual quality with superior low defect counts and excellent roughness. Technical properties and thickness levels of 70-350 μm ensure highest performance. In addition, AS 87 eco has a tight thickness tolerance of just ± 10 micrometers or lower compared to similar products with deliver tolerance levels of ± 25 micrometers.
