Initiatives for Company and Environment
SCHOTT Group
As an industrial company SCHOTT assumes particular responsibility for environmental protection. This applies both to the users of our products and to our neighbors in the vicinity of our production facilities.
Reducing the consumption of energy and resources remains a continuous focal point of our efforts. One important motivating factor is the pronounced environmental awareness of those responsible for operating our glass melting facilities and hot forming plants. Another is economic reality. For a company which produces more than half of its products for the world market from its manufacturing base in Germany, whose energy prices are the highest among the major competing countries, the cost of gas and electricity quickly puts the economic efficiency of the entire production into question.
The energy costs alone make up 30 percent of the operating costs of a melting tank. SCHOTT has succeeded in permanently reducing the specific energy requirement per ton of glass melted - by approx. 40 % since 1970 - through a host of improvements in the process sequence as well as by the use of pure oxygen for firing. This is accompanied by a significant reduction in the nitric oxide and C02 emissions which pollute our environment.
This is not the only example of how we have been able to achieve harmony between our economic and ecological objectives. Recycling waste heat, water and glass are other successful initiatives SCHOTT has taken to ensure a healthy company and an intact environment.
