Mainz, September 23, 2013 – SCHOTT AG has constantly optimized its manufacturing of receivers and thus contributed to the marketability of solar power to ensure that solar power plants (CSP – Concentrated Solar Power) will soon be able to compete with conventional forms of electricity with respect to the costs. Here, the company uses production principles from other fields like the automotive industry and successfully employs these to manufacture solar receivers.

When topics like Poka Yoke, Jidoka or Six Sigma are discussed at the two CSP plants in Mitterteich (Germany) and Aznalcóllar (Spain) the employees who work for SCHOTT in manufacturing immediately know what is meant. After all, they have borrowed these approaches aimed at achieving intelligent automation and process and quality improvements from other industries and successfully applied them to manufacturing of solar receivers. In addition, the employees have come up with ideas of their own – for example, an unloading device that replaces manual handling of receiver tubes and thus reduces waste. The CSP unit now serves as a role model for the entire SCHOTT Group with respect to productivity and throughput times. For this reason, the Chairman of the Board of Management of SCHOTT, Dr. Frank Heinricht, presented the CSP site in Aznalcóllar with the first groupwide Best Production@SCHOTT Award.
