SCHOTT CERAN® glass-ceramic cooktop panel one of Germany’s most sustainable products
Düsseldorf / Mainz, November 5, 2011 – The international technology group SCHOTT ranks among Germany’s top products when it comes to sustainability with its environmentally friendly CERAN® glass-ceramic cooktop panel. This cooktop panel earned one of the top 3 places in competing for the German Sustainability Award 2011 in the category “Germany’s most sustainable products and services”. CERAN® was recognized during a festive gala held to commemorate German Sustainability Day on November 4, 2011, in Düsseldorf. Around 1,000 guests from the worlds of business, politics, the media and society attended the event.
The expert jury paid tribute to SCHOTT’s outstanding technological expertise and how the company continues to take responsibility for society and the environment. After developing a new melting technology, the company based in Mainz, Germany, became the world’s first vendor to introduce a black glass-ceramic cooktop panel that is manufactured without using arsenic and antimony in the production process. SCHOTT is thus the leader in the area of “green” glass-ceramic.
Prof. Udo Ungeheuer, Chairman of the Board of Management of SCHOTT AG, was extremely pleased to hear that his company had been selected among the top 3: “With our green glass-ceramic cooktop panel, we are once again setting new global standards and meeting the environmental standards of the future already today. In other words, we are offering future- oriented solutions for the kitchen, especially now that the public is developing an ever greater sense of ecological awareness,” he noted.
The home appliance industry considers SCHOTT the technological and innovation leader in the area of glass-ceramic cooktop panels. The company first introduced CERAN® to the market in 1971 and has sold more than 111 million units ever since. Last year, the company was already recognized for this product by being presented with the German Innovation Award 2010.
“Our environmentally friendly cooktop panel is a product that can be used for all types of heating technologies, even induction,” explained Dr. Ulrich Ackermann, the member of the Corporate Management Committee responsible for the Home Tech business at SCHOTT, during the presentation of the award in Düsseldorf. “By introducing other innovations, such as a glass-ceramic cooktop panel that has a metallic appearance or using both blue and white LED displays in our black cooktop panels, we offer our customers in the home appliance industry important ways to stand out from the competition. End users ultimately benefit from this in their own private kitchens at the end of the value creation chain,” he added.
The German Sustainability Award has been presented since 2008. Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel served as the patron in 2011. This award recognizes companies, products and brands that combine economic success with social responsibility and environmental protection in an exemplary manner. The award seeks to promote a sustainable development in Germany and helps anchor the principles of corporate social responsibility in the public eye more firmly. The award is intended to show that acting in a sustainable manner not only helps solve social and ecological problems at both the global and local level, but can also increase a company’s competitiveness.
