A large team of employees from SCHOTT in Penang and Germany as well as Headmistress Puan Norman Binti Ismail and 100 students and teachers of the Batu Ferringi Primary School celebrated the kick-off of their new partnership. The highly motivated SCHOTT helpers cleaned the school building and painted the façade of the building as well as the children’s class-rooms together with the students and teachers. The Shangri-La Hotel Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa in Penang also supported the project. The hotel sponsored a tree which the hotel’s General Manager, Desmond Hatton, and the Chairman of the Management Board of SCHOTT, Professor Udo Ungeheuer, planted on the school grounds in a symbolic ceremony. The Chief Police Officer of Penang, Dato Wira Ayub, also took part in the event.
In addition, SCHOTT also presented the school with 20 photovoltaic modules made of SCHOTT Solar "ASI Thru" which was officially handed over to the school director.
Professor Udo Ungeheuer explains: "We are very happy to support the local school in Batu Ferringhi. Corporate social responsibility is very important to us; it has been a major pillar of SCHOTT’s corporate values since the founding of the company in 1884 in Jena, Germany."
This project marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between SCHOTT in Malaysia and the Batu Ferringhi school. “Our team here at SCHOTT in Penang will take on the role of tutors, hold regular contact and support the school in its future activities”, Harry Choi, managing director of SCHOTT Glass Malaysia adds.
