Research strengthens competitiveness
Innovations are crucial to growth and value creation. The work of our scientists and engineers today forms the basis for the company’s success tomorrow. Therefore, as a technology concern, SCHOTT constantly makes research and development a top priority.
More than 600 highly qualified employees worldwide – in the Otto Schott Research Center in Mainz (one of the world’s most up-to-date glass research units), in Duryea (Pennsylvania, USA), and in many development labs belonging to the Business Units – work on developing both new products and the materials, technologies, facilities and systems required to manufacture them.

The focus of development is on the following areas:
- New and improved glasses and glass-ceramics
- Coating technologies
- Photovoltaics and solar thermal technologies
- Fiber optic components for the automotive industry
Communication and cooperation are the key to smooth-running research and development activities, which is why SCHOTT R&D employees foster close relations with many partners from universities, research institutes and industrial undertakings in Germany and other countries.
