SCHOTT France celebrates its 50th anniversary - France is the fourth largest market for SCHOTT

SCHOTT France SAS, the French sales company of the specialty glass manufacturer SCHOTT AG, celebrated its 50th anniversary by holding a customer event in Paris. The company was founded on October 1, 1967, making it SCHOTT’s oldest European subsidiary outside Germany. The technology group has been able to steadily increase its sales in France over the past years to over EUR 100 million. This makes France the fourth largest national market worldwide for SCHOTT. The sales company located in Colombes near Paris also serves customers in North Africa.

“France has always been one of the most important markets for SCHOTT. Its geographical proximity and the close friendship between France and Germany are very important for our business activities there,” explained Dr. Heinz Kaiser, Member of the Board of Management of SCHOTT AG. SCHOTT also has three production sites in France. The specialty glass manufacturer produces packaging for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries as well as processed specialty glasses for the home appliance industry. In total, SCHOTT has 650 employees in France.

“French companies in the optical and aerospace industries, in industrial and environmental technology, architecture and lighting as well as supermarket chains rely on our specialty glasses and glass-ceramics. They value us as an innovative and reliable partner,” said Daniel Vasseur, Managing Director of SCHOTT France.

A recent example of the strong cooperation between SCHOTT and French companies is the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) of the European Southern Observatory ESO. Four of the ELT’s five mirrors are manufactured from SCHOTT’s ZERODUR® glass-ceramic, with the French company Safran Reosc responsible for the polishing and coating of these mirror substrates. The primary mirror having a diameter of 39 meters will make the ELT the largest mirror telescope when it goes into operation in 2024.

The connection between SCHOTT and France has its origins more than 130 years ago. Even the roots of the founding Schott family lie in the Vosges in France. In 1885, one year after SCHOTT’s founding in Jena (Germany), France was one of the first exporting countries for the specialty glasses with completely new features developed by company founder Otto Schott. For many decades, the company’s interests in France were managed by commercial representatives. In 1967, SCHOTT founded SCHOTT France SAS in Paris to help directly support customers and further expand the business.
