CONTURAN® DARODURABLE ANTI-REFLECTIVE & OLEOPHOBIC COATING

At a glance

SCHOTT has developed a new coating that combines durable anti-reflective and oleophobic characteristics - a breakthrough for any touch application.

Anti-reflective coatings significantly enhance the contrast of today’s high-resolution displays, however, they still struggle with the issue of finger print visibility on the surface of anti-reflective glasses when used in touch applications. Thus, the market has been demanding a super-tough, super-durable anti-fingerprint coating together with an anti-reflective coating for quite some time, which is now being offered on SCHOTT’s proven material CONTURAN® in the form of CONTURAN® DARO.

Key facts

  • Long-term durability in resisting chemical and mechanical wear
  • Repellent to fingerprints and water
  • Easy-to-clean with a dry soft cloth
  • Great haptics for a gliding feel
  • Smooth surface minimizes abrasion and friction
  • Water contact angle > 110°
  • Anti-reflective coating with luminous reflectance < 1%

Durability

Long-term Durability
In order for an AR coating to be used in a touch application, it must have an oleophobic coating that can stand up to hundreds of thousands of finger touches and rubs. CONTURAN® DARO meets this requirement and retains its properties such as reduced visibility of fingerprints, easy-to-clean properties and good haptics even if it is subjected to harsh mechanical or chemical stress.

Proof of Durability for Touch Applications
  • Inherently resistant to salt spray environments for more than 90 days
  • Rub resistance exceeds 450,000 rubs per MIL-C-675C

Surface Testing

The surfaces of touchscreens must stand up to hundreds of thousands of finger touches. Touching the surface leads to mechanical abrasion and chemical wear because of the salt in the sweat from our fingers. For this reason, we perform mechanical abrasive tests (cheesecloth rubs) and chemical resistance tests (salt spray tests) to ensure the durability of CONTURAN® DARO:

ABREX® Test

A combination of mechanical and chemical wear is simulated in the ABREX® test, which is commonly used in the automotive industry. CONTURAN® DARO slightly surpasses the performance of painted plastic parts in the automotive industry (e.g. for gear selectors), according to DIN EN 60068-2-70/IEC 68-2-70, tested with artificial sweat. CONTURAN® DARO could be used on the gear selector in your car and the oleophobic coating would remain effective even after the service life of the vehicle has ended!
