Precision CNC Machined Parts

Product Information

Precision CNC Machined Parts

CNC machined parts are parts which have been processed to complex forms. These parts have a matte (non-transparent) finish, as they have been processed with diamond tools. The process involved typically uses 3- or 5- axis machines, coupled with the use of CAO software, nearly all-geometrical forms can be achieved.

Benefits

SCHOTT Advanced Optics has accumulated many years of experience in the production of blanks and has a variety of CNC machines available.

In addition, we can:
  • Produce prototypes as well as ramp up to serial production
  • Supply precision blanks instead of raw glass, saving our customers the investment and administration efforts involved with raw glass stock
  • Reduce inner stress caused by diamond machining by chemical (acid etching) or thermal treatment (tempering).

Key Applications

Precision CNC machined blanks are often put to optical and mechanical uses in applications such as:
  • Photolithography
  • Avionics
  • Medical
  • Astronomy
  • Metrology

Materials Used

All types of optical and color glass, as well as ceramics can be machined. Some commonly processed materials include:
  • Borosilicate glass
  • Calcium fluoride crystals
  • Filter glass
  • Fused silica LITHOSIL®
  • Optical glass
  • Technical glass
  • ZERODUR® glass ceramic

Forms of Supply

Machined blanks can be supplied in dimensions up to 2550 x 700 x 500 mm or 1000 x 1000 x 1000 mm.

Specifications

We can produce machined blanks in line with our customers' specifications and ISO 10110 specifications.
  • General dimensional tolerances: up to 0.010 mm
  • Surface roughness: G3 (up to 0.4 µm Rq)
  • Flatness: 0.005 mm / 100 mm
  • Small holes up to 0.5 mm diameter

Quality Assurance

Our quality control is based on self-checking during production, random inspection, and a 100% final inspection. Equipment we use include: 3D optical measurement (Smart Scope), 3D measurement machines, profile projector as well as surface profiling (Talysurf). Complex forms are also measured with Form Talysurf. Inspection reports are available upon request.
