Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs)
Product Information
Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs) are becoming key elements for laser optics, sensor optics and lighting applications. DOEs have the advantage to combine several optical functions needed for miniaturizing of optics. They are used to diffract and shape light into the area of interest.
Until now, diffractive optical elements for mass production could only be manufactured out of plastic, with all of its known weaknesses, including high scattering losses and low resistance to temperature, moisture, lasers and chemicals.
Now SCHOTT Advanced Optics has come up with a alternative made from glass. Glass components have the advantage of having lower dispersion than polymers and of being more thermally stable, as well as more mechanically and chemically resistant.
DOEs made from high index glass feature high diffraction efficiency of up to 95%. Not only do they exhibit high mechanical, thermal and chemical durability, it is also possible to combine various optical functions inside this single element.
How does it work?
Extremely small elements diffract light inside minute spaces, then bundle it into beams with exact shapes and direct it in the desired direction.
Benefits
SCHOTT Advanced Optics uses the precision molding technique to manufacture DOEs, pressing the contours of the highly precise shaping tool into the surfaces of glass thousands of times in an identical manner. No other company is capable of manufacturing these types of optics with such reproducible results.
Other benefits include:
- High mechanical, thermal, and chemical durability
- High diffraction efficiency of up to 95% due to the glass material instead of plastic
- The ability to bend and direct light as desired in a minute space helps in the miniaturization of optical systems
